🆔 Indian Rhinoceros
All three species of Asian rhinoceroses could once be found in China, though hunting steadily reduced their range further and further south, with northern populations likely extinct well over a milennium ago and the last remaining southern populations all extinct by the early 20th century. The two horns on this specimen identify it as the Sumatran Rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis); the Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) & Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) only have a single horn. “This Zun is shaped like a rhinoceros. The rhinoceros stands, with its head up. Its body is full and round, its legs short and thick, its skin thick and wrinkled, its horns sharp, and its eyes inlaid with black beads. The belly is hollow and used to hold wine. On its back, there is an oval mouth with a lid. On the right side of the mouth of the rhinoceros, there is a round tube “Liu”. The whole body is decorated with gold and silver cloud patterns as thin as a hairspring, which is shining and gorgeous. The whole object is decorated with inlaid gold and silver cloud patterns, which are exquisite and gorgeous. Although it is a national treasure with practical use, it is full of vitality. Both Black & White Rhinoceroses (both two-horned species) were native to Egypt in pre-dynastic times, but were likely extinct by the Early Dynastic Period. Still, rhinoceroses remained known to later Egyptians through contacts and trade with other regions, and likewise were known in the Greco-Roman world, including being imported (usually through Egypt) and put on display in Rome itself.
