Interviewing experts is the most interesting part of writing the kinds of nature/science books I write. I enjoy learning about their field work on a particular animal or plant. I like getting the science directly.

When preparing to interview someone, do your homework. Prepare questions that show you’ve read some of your subject’s work and understand their position in their field. It’s always a privilege to interview your heroes.

Tropical forests, the most diverse environments on land, offer a stunning example of how complex interrelationships at every level —from roots to canopy—make a stable ecosystem. Politicians, take note from nature.

Turn your children’s questions into adventures in finding answers together. I love when my grandson asks, “How do you know that?” He wants evidence-based answers. Pity no one in the current administration wants evidence for anything.

Anybody who writes children’s books knows you don’t write down to kids. You write up to
them. Children’s questions are profound. I learned this years ago when my 4-year-old daughter asked me, “Mom, does the universe have an edge?”

Just because I don't spend my time on SM, my website (or in real life), shouting, complaining, arguing, protesting & swearing (I don't swear anyway), doesn't mean I don't know what's going on in the news & world.
I'd rather be a thinker, #theoriser & #sciencewriter like it says in my profile.
Excerpt from a review article. Circled in red is the sentence " Had we realized that NF-κB would have a wide role in inflammation and other natural and pathological processes, we might have found a simpler designation for ease of typing."
I'm doing a bit of research for something I'm writing on NF-κB and came across this gem of a paper. I am having this struggle right now. 😂

Millions of years before humans began farming, leafcutter ants were farming fungus in vast underground nests. They “deserve recognition as Earth’s ultimate superorganisms,” said experts Bert Holdobler & E.O. Wilson.
