Year 3 had a blast learning to identify solids, liquids and gases this afternoon. We discussed the properties of each state of matter and worked together to sort examples of each into the correct groups. We then set up an investigation to explore to explore the properties of gases. #ScienceatWelbeck

We tried the experiment with different carbonated liquids and also tested with both warm and cold cola. The warm cola created the biggest geyser. Great fun had by all. #ScienceatWelbeck

In Y3 science club, we did the famous mentos and coke experiment. We discussed how it is a physical reaction and how the carbon dioxide rushes to escape when the mentos are added. #ScienceatWelbeck

Year 6W have been using their oracy skills to rehearse explanations of how the eye works so that we can see, in preparation for writing an explanation text! We have been using technical vocabulary such as: cornea, retina, optical nerve, convex, transparent. #ScienceatWelbeck #OracyatWelbeck

To kick start our States of Matter lesson this week, everyone in year 4/3 worked together to group solids, liquids and gases. There was such impressive scientific dialogue in the room and we discussed the fact that some of the items could change state too! #ScienceatWelbeck #OracyatWelbeck

In science club, Y3 explored sound. We made salt dance on cups using sounds waves, made a phone using cups and string and felt the sound vibrations moving down the string as we spoke. The children loved being able to see the sound waves and communicate with their string phones! #ScienceatWelbeck

Year 3 wrapped up #BritishScienceWeek with another exciting investigation to explore forces! We predicted which material would be best for a parachute before making prototypes from foam, net, paper, foil and denim. We then tested them outside and were suprised by some results. #ScienceatWelbeck

Our Y6 engineers set about designing a boat that could bear weights. Each team designed boats factoring in surface area, water-proof materials, forces and reinforcement. The winning team’s boat could support 600g! Well done Jade, Aishah and Ruqayyah! #ScienceatWelbeck #BritishScienceWeek

Year 3 science club made lava lamps to explore density and chemical reactions. We saw how oil and water dont mix then we watched the reactions taking place. We watched as the CO2 gas was released, floated up through the oil and then the trapped water fell back through the oil. #ScienceatWelbeck

To celebrate #BritishScienceWeek, Year 3 were challenged to work as marine engineers, making floating rafts out of paper. We ensured we conducted a fair test to investigate what shape and size of boat works best to carry the most marbles without sinking. #ScienceatWelbeck #OutdoorLearningatWelbeck

To kick-start Science Week, Year 5C received a special message from NASA! Their mission: send a light message from Earth to a space station. Using their knowledge that light travels in straight lines, they used mirrors to reflect the beam and guide it to its target. #ScienceatWelbeck
