Buddleja colvilei is a Himalayan species with large (for a #Buddleja), funnel-shaped flowers in pendulous clusters. Joseph Hooker found the species in Sikkim in 1849 & named it in honor of Sir James Colvile, a judge who assisted Hooker in India. #Scrophulariaceae #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪🌱

Buddleja indica was once known as Nicodemia diversifolia, but Nicodemia is now subsumed in #Buddleja. It was once a popular #houseplant, called Indoor Oak, but it has fallen out of fashion. Foliage is good, but the flowers are not much. #Scrophulariaceae #Houseplanthour #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪🌱

Yes, #Buddleja davidii is weedy – I’ve seen hundreds growing along railway embankments around London – but it’s a great long-season nectar source for insects. Back in the 20th C, when I first learned Buddleja (sometimes spelled Buddleia) it was in the #Loganiaceae or even Buddlejaceae, but nowadays it’s in the #Scrophulariaceae. This peripatetic genus of 111 spp. is more than just weedy B. davidii (pictured). It’s #Buddleja week! #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪
