I mentioned Rediviva (#Melittidae) in my previous post, but it’s with Diascia spp., also endemic to S. Africa, that Rediviva really shines. Diascia has paired nectar spurs lined with oil-secreting hairs. This is D. longicornis πŸ“·: Richard Adcock CCBYNC4. #Scrophulariaceae #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Hemimeris racemosa of South Africa has glandular hairs in its flowers that secrete oil. The bee in this photo is a Rediviva sp. (#Melittidae), an oil-collecting specialist, which has speciated in the region. πŸ“·: Odette Curtis CCBYNC4. #bees #Scrophulariaceae #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

If butterflies & moths are your thing, you can’t go far wrong with Buddleja. They have short corolla tubes, so just about any Lep can feed on the tasty nectar. Warning: Some species are weedy and invasive (but some cultivars are sterile). #Scrophulariaceae #PollinatorWeek #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

In its first year, it grows a rosette of densely hairy leaves. It produces a tall (1-2m) stem in its second year before flowering.

Bonus #Buddleja post: This is Buddleja (stachyoides x tubiflora) 'Orange Sceptre.' It was bred & released earlier this century by horticulturists at the Univ. of Arkansas. Oddly enough, in my garden, insects show no interest in the flowers. #Scrophulariaceae #Botany #PlantScience 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Buddleja lindleyana from China is one of the most elegant #Buddleja species grown in gardens. The sparsely flowered, dangling inflorescences can be almost 30 cm (12 in) long. It’s lovely (but deer food where I live). #Scrophulariaceae #Botany #PlantScience 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

This is Buddleja salviifolia, a species from eastern & southern Africa. Like the one in yesterday’s #Buddleja post, this species is adapted to dry, harsh conditions. #Scrophulariaceae Cue music: 🎢 It's the Hard-Knock Life. 🎢

Just look at the narrow, revolute, hard leaves of Buddleja loricata. Those leaves tell the story of a plant adapted to harsh habitats. It is from South Africa and is one of the most drought-tolerant species of #Buddleja. #Scrophulariaceae #Botany #PlantScience 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Buddleja colvilei is a Himalayan species with large (for a #Buddleja), funnel-shaped flowers in pendulous clusters. Joseph Hooker found the species in Sikkim in 1849 & named it in honor of Sir James Colvile, a judge who assisted Hooker in India. #Scrophulariaceae #Botany #PlantScience 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Buddleja indica was once known as Nicodemia diversifolia, but Nicodemia is now subsumed in #Buddleja. It was once a popular #houseplant, called Indoor Oak, but it has fallen out of fashion. Foliage is good, but the flowers are not much. #Scrophulariaceae #Houseplanthour #Botany #PlantScience 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

#Buddleja occurs in the Americas, Africa, and southern & SE Asia. It gets to New Guinea but not Australia (again, Oz?). I’ve seen species in the wild in a few places. This is Buddleja madagascariensis in… wait for it… Madagascar. #Scrophulariaceae #Madagascar #Botany #PlantScience 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Yes, #Buddleja davidii is weedy – I’ve seen hundreds growing along railway embankments around London – but it’s a great long-season nectar source for insects. They don’t call it β€œbutterfly bush” for nothing! Seedless, non-escaping cultivars are available. #Scrophulariaceae #Botany #PlantScience 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Back in the 20th C, when I first learned Buddleja (sometimes spelled Buddleia) it was in the #Loganiaceae or even Buddlejaceae, but nowadays it’s in the #Scrophulariaceae. This peripatetic genus of 111 spp. is more than just weedy B. davidii (pictured). It’s #Buddleja week! #Botany #PlantScience 🌾πŸ§ͺ
