This is part of a 50 mile march route that culminated in the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

There are visitor centers in Selma (currently being remodeled) and Montgomery, Alabama, as well as this site along the highway where the marches took place in February and March 1965. A white woman, Viola Liuzzo, was murdered along this highway in an ambush, while driving marchers back to Selma following the completion of the march.
