Zhao Liying became a favourite of mine too after I watched #Minglan - & I loved her partnership with Lin Genxin in #ShenLi, it was one of my dramas of the year from last year 👍
I loved #Shenli ☺️ - great costumes & visuals, but also a moving slice of life romance with gently comic moments
With #ShenLi it was probably a personal thing, because others have says they found it slow going at first - but I was totally hooked from the first few scenes
#Wonderland kicks off when the leads meet each other in a mutual assassination type situation & have to hide in a bath!

Yes, #EmpressesinthePalace is the real OG historical or palace drama (at least for the post 2010 era). It’s also still addictively watchable, as is #Yanxi (both are faves of mine!)
I dropped both #Ashes & #EternalLove, but loved #EternalLoveofDream. I didn’t finish #PrincessAgents but loved #ShenLi

He had a supporting role in #ShenLi which is where I’ve seen him before, but he’s not been in too much. He’s not going to take any acting gongs, but he doesn’t need to for his role. The expressive roles are played by those around him, so his reservedness is a good counterbalance
Apparently her criticism of #ShenLi had to do with her view that the lead actors were too old to perform in an idol drama. That she managed to diss two charismatic actors while also reducing a fantasy drama like #ShenLi to an idol puff piece, reveals a cynicism that I think can be questioned

It’s nice to see him back though after his role as Mo Fang in #ShenLi - he was an interesting, but also pathetic character there. So it’s nice to see him play someone with more of a boss aura (though yes, his mouth will remain infuriating throughout 😂)
She was superb in #MingLan
That’s one of my very favourite dramas - up there with #Empresses & #Yanxi (& #MeetYourself too, tho that’s a totally different drama)
She’s also good in #ShenLi - she owned that role
I liked her in #LegendofLuZhen too, as well as in a modern drama #WildBloom
Re: #ShenLi. Yes, I hear you. I like dramas from different genres, so I was okay watching it, but I know xianxia & fantasy stuff is not everyone’s cup of tea! I would be happy to watch Zhao Liying in almost anything (though I couldn’t finish #LegendofFei, despite the co-presence of Wang Yibo)
I haven’t read the book either, but I’m sure fan service was involved both in how they framed #ShenLi & ended it. If you don’t mind fantasy type stuff & in the future you have some leisure time to burn, #ShenLi is a healing balm PA fans may appreciate 😊
I think though that the way it’s made is so different, and the cast is so different, that even if it’s technically a sequel it’s actually more like a remake. So I think it will be fine to watch it as a stand alone drama (without having seen the original PA).

I get that your main concern is with Xia. All I am saying is that you can find Xia and Xian in dramas like #ShenLi - and if you emphasise the Xian part not just the Xia, you can actually find a whole lot of Xia in other dramas (like #ShenLi) with Xian
Most people will see #ShenLi as Xianxia
As I said, the reason why I picked #ShenLi is because it fits definitionally with both premises: Xian and Xia
*If* #ShenLi is Xianxia (which you are free to reject), the next step is to see how it relates to these other dramas, not by focussing on Xia, but on Xian

#ShenLi is one of my absolute favourites. I know it’s not in the same league - as you say - as #Minglan etc, but it’s so compelling to watch their characters go through life and death for the ‘well being of worlds’ as well as for each other!
#TheLegendofShenLi is like therapy for people who watched #PrincessAgents, because in Shen Li they get a HE
It’s helpful to think of #PrincessAgents as a mortal tribulation that their immortal characters in #ShenLi have gone through at some point 😅
