Also playing a fox here and getting to call a character in a later drama foxy is charming. #LoveBeyondtheGrave
I liked her performance in #LoveOnTheTurquoiseLand, but I got a bit lost with all the monster stuff! 😅 (it’s one that I mean to return to at some point)
But I’ve liked some of her romance roles too (not everyone has seen it, but I really liked her in #EternalLoveofDream - note: NOT Eternal Love)
Ive kept #EternalLoveOfDream on my special “I know I’ll love this” list (like #Yanxi was before last year) so I have something to look forward to if I’m ever struggling to find a drama to watch
She was great in this!
I also loved seeing her in #EternalLoveofDream & #TheLongBallad

I know xianxia dramas aren’t Ciele’s cup of tea, but I really liked Dilraba in #EternalLoveofDream (which was my first xianxia I think). But some of her modern roles are also interesting - aside from #YouAreMyGlory, she was more recently in a gritty detective drama, #SwordRose, which I quite liked

I loved #EternalLoveofDream - it was my first (completed) xianxia, so it has a special place in my memory 🙂
I actually started #TenMilesofPeachBlossom first, & was enjoying it - but once I started ELOD I got absorbed in that, & have yet to go back to finish TMOPB
I loved #EternalLoveofDream (Pillow Book) - Dilraba & Vengo were really good together (throughout their various lives!)

In the end I watched #EternalLoveofDream instead - with Vengo Gao & Dilraba as the main leads - as I read somewhere that it was supposed to be the “official” adaptation from the Three Pillows book. & I actually really liked it
But at some point I want to go back to finish #TenMiles
I didn’t mention it on the list (because there’s only so much space for recs), but the first xianxia dramas I watched were #AncientLovePoetry & #EternalLoveofDream (not #EternalLove), & I recently rewatched the former & still really like it
It’s with Xu Kai & Zhou Dongyu, who are both perfect in it
My intros to fantasy were #AncientLovePoetry & #EternalLoveofDream, so they’re the ones I think about when I recollect my first Chinese fantasy experiences
But yes, once you’ve seen folks spitting blood 🩸, you know you’re watching a Chinese drama 😂

Yes, #EmpressesinthePalace is the real OG historical or palace drama (at least for the post 2010 era). It’s also still addictively watchable, as is #Yanxi (both are faves of mine!)
I dropped both #Ashes & #EternalLove, but loved #EternalLoveofDream. I didn’t finish #PrincessAgents but loved #ShenLi

I mentioned this on a recent thread, but I watched #EternalLoveofDream first - it was my first ever Xianxia - so I was conditioned to see the interpretation of #PillowBook through its lens. So when I tried to watch #EternalLove I was a bit blinkered. It’s another I need to return to
The main reason I struggled to finish #EternalLove is that I watched #EternalLoveofDream beforehand, so had already adjusted myself to a certain way of framing the story. I think if I went back to watch #EternalLove now - having forgotten much of #EternalLoveofDream - I would be more open to it.
I don’t know why merely communicating this assessment creates such hostility in some people, but apparently it does! Nevertheless I still feel that on balance it is more correct to call #EternalLoveofDream - & dramas like it - Xianxia rather than Xuanhuan, for the reasons mentioned.
Yet #EternalLoveofDream struck me as being an essentially Chinese mythological fantasy drama, without much in the way of Western fantasy elements or sci-fi. So it feels strange to call such a drama Xuanhuan rather than Xianxia.
I’ve been mulling over this #cdrama Xianxia thing since the toxic episode from a few days ago, and it occurred to me that my first ever Xianxia was #EternalLoveofDream - *not* its more famous cousin #EternalLove (which I didn’t finish), but the later, supposedly more faithful adaptation of the novel
I’m glad 😅
There are other people I’ve been talking to who are absolutely adamant that I should never use the word Xianxia for dramas like

Some things I’ve read say it has to do with modern Western concepts & ideas from modern western fantasy dramas, while Yilin’s definition in the diagram comports better with dramas like #EternalLoveofDream
The controversy seems to be because people feel I am wanting to merge Xianxia & Xuanhuan
