The postbox is in the wall of the stone house, next to a stone building with a blocked arch. The arch was where the two stationary steam engines were housed, either side of a drum that extended across today’s roadway. The engines provided 6O horsepower each & cost £3,482, from Robert Stephenson of Newcastle. A rope was attached to the wagons which pulled them up & lowered them down the incline, winding the rope around the drum. The engines were not reliable & had to be rebuilt by Timothy Hackworth. On opening day Locomotion No 1 hauled the wagons on to Darlington & Stockton from the foot of the incline in Shildon.

The National Railway Museum says - “The Gaunless Bridge is one of the earliest iron railway bridges in the world. Designed by George Stephenson, it spanned the River Gaunless, connecting the Stockton and Darlington Railway with Witton Park colliery, west of Shildon. Horses were used to pull wagonloads of coal along this section of line, as the structure would not have been strong enough for locomotives. It was in use until 1901. Stephenson used the knowledge of iron he had developed designing railways to engineer this freestanding iron railway bridge. The interlocking design allowed parts to fit together without the need for bolts or rivets. Curved iron sections braced with straight trusses worked in combination to balance the forces of wagons passing over the bridge, spreading the load evenly across its length.”
