Shorties are starting the courtship phase of their visit in Utah. This male owl was taking a break from the difficult task of flying high enough in the air to safely free fall while doing staccato wing claps, then the owl must catch himself midair and continue flight. #shortearedowls

A beautiful Snow Owl sits atop a pole looking at the camera and wondering just who the hell I think I am to be disturbing them. They are a large owl with bright yellow eyes and this one has somewhat less barring indicating it may be more mature. The clear sky fills the rest of the frame in a light cyan.

A lovely short eared owl sits atop a pole and looks directly at the viewer, they have yellow eyes and you can see their little "short ears" on top of their head. The owl and pole sit somewhat centred by to the right and the rest of the frame is filled with a clear cyan sky.

These feathered friends heard there was a call for #SuperBOwls so they flew out of the archives. The #shortearedowls come to protected grasslands nearby yearly, the #snowyowls come intermittently in winter based on their population, and if there is enough prey where they live.

A short-eared owl is lit by low winter sun as it flies over the fields of Elmley Nature Reserve, on the Isle of Sheppey, against a backdrop of blue-toned industrial buildings, including recycling and power plants, on the North Kent coast bordering The Swale estuary. The owl almost seems to glow a deep gold.

I'm afraid that the #ShortEaredOwls that have been providing my wildlife-watching pleasure for the past 3 months are getting ready to move on. Not seeing so many, or so easily - but there are still some around & they're still stunning!

Further up the hill, #RedGrouse numbers are on the up and with the numerous Field Vole signs it’s no surprise that #ShortearedOwls are breeding this year. #Merlins bred on site last year, a sure sign their passerine food sources are increasing.
