A lifer for me today at Oaken Woods in Surrey. Eucera longicornis, the Long-horned Bee. Very happy to make their acquaintance. Photo-bombed by a Swollen-thigh Beetle, Oedemera nobilis.

Another bee active now is Andrena florea. The females only collect pollen from White Bryony and males can be found patrolling over the plants. Sometimes the males will settle in the flowers for the night and the petals close over them.

A Black bee with smoky wings on a white Nemesia 'Wisley Vanilla' flower

This is the bee that started my interest in bees and then wasps. She is a rare Andrena nigrospina that visited our Surrey garden briefly in May 2017.

It's Solitary Bee Week!

Founded in 2018 to raise awareness of the importance of solitary bee populations, and now hosted by Buglife, this week-long event hopes to encourage the public to pledge their support for these incredible insects.

Always a pleasure to come across a Golden-fringed Mason Bee (Osmia aurulenta) nest! This is one of 3 UK bee species to nest in empty snail shells. A female had just finished pasting leaf mastic over the entrance to the shell when I came across her yesterday at Porth Neigwl.

I found this Flavous Nomad Bee today, it's a cuckoo bee so was hanging around a mining bee entrance (it pops an egg in the hole of another species). There were many holes on this mountain bike track. Bare earth is needed for nesting for many species

To celebrate #WorldBeeDay and #SolitaryBeeWeek this is one of my favourites, Andrena labiata. This pic of a male is from 2019 but the first for this year showed up last week.

Further to my earlier post of 2 days ago the next morning I saw the female bee presumed to be Megachile willughbiella also. Those mandibles look well made for leaf cutting. #SolitaryBeeWeek #buglife

Delighted to find two male Willughby’s Leafcutter bees on my bee hotel early this morning. A new record for the garden in Fife. #SolitaryBeeWeek
