Heikki on #Nauvo service station jukebox in the 1970s: ”As one of our interviewees pointed out, depending on the season, you first had to take a boat or walk on the ice, then catch the bus, and finally walk the rest of the way.”

Last (!) day of fieldwork, oh dear. Running the machine down with this lovely book. Since Feb we have accumulated approx. 200 km of listening walks, 800 recordings + 100h automated recordings, dozen pounds interviews, few kilos surveys, a bus load of new friends and research notes 🪇🐋

Nice views for Sunday evening decibel meterings at #Nauvo. Lots of fledgling waterbird action.

juL McOisans about writing a sound diary in #Lesconil, school assignment style. It's not that straight forward after all. BTW juL was part of the team already 25 years ago!

The last of six 24h traffic counts has begun (quite pleased). Morning 5am at #Nauvo, sun is up, a little humidity in the air, food lorries delivering their goods to both duopoly stores (S and K) and people attending to graves of relatives. Counted 9 different birds.

Today is #listeningwalk day in #Nauvo. We walk the same route(s) at five different times of a day. I found this interesting spot where new asphalt meets old. It is a no brainer that the sounds from traffic is more silent on the new surface.

We are in #Nauvo! The last of our six villages. Started briskly with listening walks. 7 am it was calm and sunny, mainly ventilators, recycle trucks, phylloscopus trochilus and line of vehicles from the ferry every 15min. The new silent asphalt works like a miracle.

Last day in #Dollar, last recordings, interviews, documentations to be done. Can’t believe we’re heading home after 6 weeks of this academic interrail. We have a really great team tho. Tired but happy.
In this pic I record 🐝🐝 Pic by Tasha Currie who was a big help for us here!

Aaand that’s a rap, traffic count night shift ends on my part. All the birds are asleep, last customers exit the pub, the burn runs under a starlit sky.

So, our fieldwork consists of 10 days in 6 European small towns. Not all have hotels or restaurants, nor accommodations have kitchens. Yes, we have allergies. To make do we have carried food with us and made interesting dishes, with eg coffee makers. Behold, the joy, of proper food!

Today is listening walk day in #Dollar. My walking area is the south-east part of town where sounds of Dollar and Kelly burns flowing are a company.

The Notre Dame de la mer bell tower seen from the West.
Listening and recording the acoustic profile of the Notre Dame de la mer church bells, from North, South, East and West at the same time. They ring only at 7, 12 and 19. The winds make the whole endeavour a tiny bit debatable but they do sound very nice.

”At that particular moment and place, her affordance was constructed from a real-time acoustic environment and a two-channel mediated reality of 19th century opera and smartphone media feeds.
Imagine her on a balcony in 1975.”

Morning in #Lesconil started with 7am listening walk. Light wind from East, the bakeries are open (rustling bags, chatting), and troglodytes troglodytes singing away. High tide makes the sea sound closer and louder. Yellow-legged gull galore.

Sailing boats at a harbour in Lesconil.
We have arrived in #Lesconil (the 4/6 of the villages we study), and so has the low tide. Yesterday evening was calm and warm ”as bird’s milk” (a Finnish saying). Tomorrow we do listening walks: we were comparing the routes of 2000 and aligning them to current infra.

Heikki writes about our day at a baitá.
”These #soundscapes are at once traditional, modern and mediated, social, global and religious, depending on how one is inclided to interpret them. Most importantly, they are human.”
Thank you #Cembra for your hospitality ❤️

Next: Lesconil! But first, Paris. 6h to read of acoustic weird.
”I listened till I grew cold listening, but it rapped and it rapped, and by and by it was morning, and it stopped. Rats! Mice! Wind! Broken plaster! Crickets! Imagination! Dreams! Fancies! Blind headache! Nonsense!”
