Heute vor 42 Jahren: 1984: Bei der Mission STS-41-B des Space Shuttle Challenger führt der Astronaut Bruce McCandless erstmals einen Außenbordeinsatz mit einem Düsenrucksack – einer sogenannten Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) – durch.

I was in 8th grade computer lab. Watched the #SpaceShuttleChallenger explode on tv live with my classmates. Devastating.
Here’s a song I play every year on this day: www.songfacts.com/facts/john-d...

Where were you at when the shuttle exploded?

We didn't even realize what we had just witnessed.... it took our teachers a moment to gather themselves to explain it. 🥹

40 years ago today, the #spaceshuttlechallenger broke apart shortly into its flight, killing all seven crew members. Gregory Horndeski channeled his grief over the tragedy into a series of paintings paying tribute to those lost lives. The works are on view at his Horndeski Contemporary in #SantaFe

The reason why a lot of us did watch it live in class was because of Christa McAullife, who would've been the 1st teacher in space. It's mentioned in this clip. #GenX #SpaceShuttleChallenger #40Years

On January 28, 1986, the Challenger space shuttle and her seven-member crew were lost when a ruptured O-ring in the right solid rocket booster caused an explosion soon after launch. This photograph, taken a few seconds after the accident, shows the main engines and solid rocket booster exhaust plumes entwined around a ball of gas from the external tank. With all of the craziness in the USA, I want to take a minute to remember the #SpaceShuttleChallenger Explosion from January 28, 1986. I was in the 8th grade then. I remember my deep sorrow when I realized the crew was gone. 1/2
39 years ago today we lost seven brave astronauts when the Challenger exploded. Given my generation, that day is forever emblazoned in my memory from watching live. I was only 6 years old, but I remember being so confused and then sad.
