I am so surprised that nobody has written a pykerett fic where Mr. Rye has an “affair” with his driver during their first visit at The Glitz Room. (Spoilers for Startdust Rhapsody: Anthem ep 5) Like in this context they’re in an established relationship but like also they still got their baggage and cope how they can. So like Pyke is kind of still moping about his ex and his past, so to remedy that he just starts drinking a lot and heavily flirting with Rett. They aren’t a very PDA type of couple and they keep things professional out in the field but something about the club and the music gets them a little loose. table to sitting on Rett’s lap. They’re giggling and flirting like teenagers, playing up their fake personas because something about that is really hot to them.
Rett: *hand sliding under Pyke’s shirt* Ya know, you’re probably do for a big promotion real soon. Pyke: *giggling* Mmh, reeeaally? How big we talking here? Rett: We can discuss it back at the hotel later, somewhere…private. Maybe my room? Pyke: *fiddling with Rett’s tie* Oh, Mr. Rye are you sure? What about your wife? Rett: What she doesn’t know won’t hurt nobody.
By the time they get called backstage to meet Pixel, Pyke has moved onto Rett’s lap and they’re just making-out at this point. They manage to keep it together long enough to properly talk with Pixel, still keeping close but not touching. By the time they make it back to the hotel and get Ziggy and Ko to bed they’re both back on each other like rabid animals. They don’t sleep for most of the night and wake up late the next morning. I think it would also be funny if Pyke woke up at the same time that girl leaving Ko’s room did, so they’re just staring at each other in the hallway like 👁️👄👁️

They hadn't even told the team about them until that incident with the mirrors in The Viceroy's castle. The only person that knew about them was Portia Bella because it's impossible to keep secrets from her; if Rett is considered the "team therapist" she's considered the "captain's therapist". Anyways, they are racing to this location and when they get there, there is a fleet of old, shoddy, mismatched ships with a slightly larger clunkier one leading the way. Just as Rett was about to hail them in a fucking tear in the fabric of reality opens up like a zipper and a large impossibly constructed ship appears out of nowhere. The familiar boom of Gideon's voice filters through the coms: "Permissions to come aboard?" The hanger doors open, Shepherd's ship docks and Gideon's gigantic monstrosity is somehow able to shrink down and fit in as well. The two brothers are the first to see each other, not knowing that the other had been missing too. They wonder aloud "what the hell happened to you?" before embracing in a tight hug that nearly breaks them down. They hold strong up until their dads show up, and it's like a dam is broken for all of them.
They run to each other, collapsing into a heap of raw anguish and overwhelming joy, holding each other tight enough to bruise, as if it was the only way to confirm that this was real and not some wistful hallucination. After about 20 minutes or so the tears subsided enough for the small family to notice that they were not alone and in fact being watched. Each of their crew members silently watched the reunion with fondness and a few watery eyes. Rett, ever the host and ship captain, composed himself as best he could before asking everyone if they've eaten dinner yet. They all piled into the lounge area, everyone pitching in to help set up extra seating and a select few (Clayton, Kremy, and Portia) helping Rett out in the kitchen. Everyone talking excitedly and filling each other in on their adventures and what they missed. "What the fuck do you mean, you and Kremy are married now?" "How the fuck did you get a kid, Shepherd?" "You guys stopped a Cacophony apocalypse?!"
Some of my headcanons on what species the ouaw and cos crew would be. Though the ouaw crew has been discussed by the Avantris team on lives before. The only ones I did change was Twig (it fit the narrative better) and Kremy (I know Richie said he would be a Gorgonite but god damn it I want my alligator man to stay an alligator 😤) Gideon - Raizo Kremy - Saurians (Deinosuchus) Gricko - Glowblin Frost - Clawderan Torbek - Laika (junkyard dog) Twig - Anitron; looks like a combination Human/Amanite/Poggle Hootsie - Space Owlbear (she is perfect as is 🥰) Shepherd - Nilari/Solari Sarnax - Saurians (Planocephalosaurus) Victoria - Solari/Human Kana - Human Clayton - Human

As much as they don't want to split up at the moment, the Rhapsody isn't fast enough to reach both Shepherd and Gideon, so Pyke hops on the Sparrow and races to Gideon's last known location. Neither could be found, Shepherd's coordinates seem to not even exist, as if some unknown force was scrambling his location. Rett painstakingly combed through every single mile of dead space surrounding that location but could find not a trace of Shepherd or the ship he was in. Pyke found Gideon's crew ship, torn to shreds and the Witchlight Carnival nowhere in sight. Despite no response from the ship Pyke still landed and tore through it desperately seeking any sign of life or at least a clue to where they were. Just like Rett, Pyke found nothing.
With their boys gone Rett and Pyke threw themselves into their work, taking job after job with little to no rest. Occasionally, they would investigate again, any little tidbit they could find about where their boys were going. Finding info on Remy Garou, about the mission given to Gideon and his crew by Madryck Roslof, if they could finish it they'd have enough money to clear their debt, and every single scrap of info on what the hell the Witchlight Carnival is. They find out about Clayton Azran, his research about the lost planet of Barovia, hidden between the vails of Cacophony, the only known people said to be able to travel between the veils was the Vistani. They have all this information and yet no way of using it to find their boys.
When Pyke ends up in jail Rett hires Quibly and Portia Bella Gones, a lovely yet quirky couple working as a bounty hunting duo. With all that's going on in his life Rett is initially cold and standoffish towards them, unfortunately for him Portia Bella has a way of bulldozing through any wall put in front of her even without her esper powers. Quibly is always right behind her, clumsy but charming in his endeavors to help insure smooth relations between everyone. When Pyke gets out the Gones treat him with the same overwhelming enthusiasm as they had Rett, and though in the moment it's a lot to take in he finds himself enamored with them. In finding out the identity of Hacksaur and that Ziggy was just a kid, Quibly and Portia tell the group about a deal they had been offered but didn't end up taking. Portia said their main reason for refusing was that they didn't want to get involved in politics, but seeing how young and naive Ziggy really was boiled an anger in her something fierce.
Things go about the same throughout the rest of the campaign, though they find out some things about Portia's forgotten passed with Khymera Bionetics. She doesn't remember much about her childhood or even being involved with the company but when they investigate Site Omicron they find a few files about her in their system. They're very bare bones and don't make much sense but it seems that they were trying to push the limits of esper powers while also simultaneously trying to control it. Anyways, thats a whole other storyline I'm still developing 😅 So a few weeks after the defeat of The Viceroy, Rett is reading his morning paper seeimg that there is commotion coming from the other end of the galaxy and potentially a new planet having been discovered. At that moment he receives a ping from an unknown source, all that was given was coordinates and a short message: "Coms incompatible. Meet us halfway. Shepherd." Rett nearly had a heart attack and Pyke was halfway into having a panic attack because there was noway in hell that was real. But even if it wasn't they weren't gunna risk the chance at potentially getting at least one of their sons back.

Years later, when the boys finally join the GBG, both helping out Rett and Pyke but also doing solo missions every now and then. Gideon soon finds a partner of his own, a Saurians Deinosuchus named Kremy, ex-convict and just as much of a troublemaker as Gideon is. Rett, Pyke, and Shepherd DO NOT like him but they also understand that Gideon is old enough to make his own decisions and if he trusts Kremy enough to have his back they have to trust that Gideon knew what he was getting himself into. Gideon's crew soon grows to include Frost, Gricko, and Hootsie, and though Rett don't like how many risky jobs they take he also knows that fighting Gideon about it will just push him towards danger even more. Shepherd meanwhile has started to go on more and more solo missions, he still occasionally comes back to help Rett and Pyke but it seems he's trying to quell an anger still festering inside him since childhood. He's just as if not more reckless than Gideon is but where as Gideon has a whole team alongside him Shepherd prefers to do things solo. This worries Rett a lot but it especially worries Pyke even more because it's like watching his younger self do reckless shit all over again. Needless to say that both Rett and Pyke are extremely worried about their boys.
Despite the growing tension Shepherd and Gideon do keep in constant contact with their fathers Rett and Pyke and have agreed to come visit at least once a month if they all just so happen to be in the same sector. A week before having to go off on separate missions they all reunite for a family dinner, and a huge fight broke out. Rett found out that Gideon has gotten into debt with a mob boss named Remy Garou and that Shepherd was going on an expedition near uncharted territory rumored to be crawling with Discordant. During the heat of the moment a lot of very harsh things were said, mainly to hurt each other and fuel the burning anger festering deep within them. Gideon and Shepherd left and neither Rett or Pyke heard from them for several months. Rett caved after like a week of no contact but each time he tried to send a message or call it was ignored, the guilt of it all ate at his soul. Pyke wasn't far behind from Rett but every time he picked up a phone or typed out a message he'd psych himself out of it, the anxiety of it all forming a pit in his stomach.
Shepherd called first, looking much like an embarrassed child despite being a dangerous bounty hunter. Rett apologized before Shepherd could even speak, just so overjoyed that at one of his kids was talking to him again. This surprised Shepherd, having expected to be yelled at again, which made him feel even more guilty for all the terrible things he said. He apologizes as well, say how after Dandy left he's been feeling like he's losing everything all over again. He feels helpless and though he knows that they can all handle themselves Shepherd feels like he failed to protect them. They talked for a while, awkward and still a little sore, but happy to be talking again and trying to understand the other's perspective. Then the alarm on Shepherd's ship starts going off, indicating that they were being pulled into orbit by an unknown force. Communications get cut off and Rett is left scrambling to track down Shepherd's last location ping.
It's about a month's trip, no known Empire warp points to get there faster, and a lot of it is just dead space. A couple 2 weeks into it Gideon sends a video message, in it he apologizes but also confesses how he feels like he's constantly disappointing them. He knows he's being hot-headed and reckless but he trusts his crew and he wishes that his own family could trust them...trust him too know what they're doing. Gideon also confesses that they're heading to an artificial moving planet known as The Witchlight Carnival, near a dimensional rift that supposedly leads into the Motlien dimension. He doesn't know if he'll come back but in case he doesn't he wants Rett and Pyke to know that he's sorry and that he loves them. The message cuts off before it could end due to interference, Gideon's last known GPS location seemingly in the middle of nowhere before disappearing.

Cowboy family in space AU Aka Quibly lives, Portia replaces Glup, and Gideon and Shepherd still end up being Rett's adopted sons because I say so damn it 😤 Get ready this is long 😅 !!!Spoilers for Stardust Rhapsody Anthem and Overture (slightly), Curse of Strahdanya, and Once Upon a Witchlight!!! So here's what I'm thinking: After Rett leaves GrimCo maybe 4 to 5 years into becoming a bounty hunter he gets assigned to take down this religious cult and throughout some shenanigans he accidentally acquires an 8yr old Shepherd (Nilari/Solari hybrid), angry and seeking revenge for his murdered parents. Shepherd tags along and helps Rett finish his assignment and by the end of it Rett has now acquired a son he would burn the universe down for.
About a year later Rett gets another assignment to track down this group in the blackmarket selling some sort of illegal product. It's this long train like space craft in a secluded sector of the universe, and it's selling all the usual illegal stuff: drugs, weapons, etc., but none of that is what the assignment is looking for apparently. Shepherd, having joined Rett, even after Rett told him to stay put in the ship, is able to sneak around and find what they're looking for. This particular group has been pushing this new type of ship engine with a very powerful energy source, their own ship being powered by it as well and only needing to be "replaced" every 100 years or so. Sneaking into the engine room Shepherd found out why, it is powered by the life essence of Raizo, this ship's engine having just gotten "replaced" with a red Raizo child, Gideon, maybe a year or two younger than Shepherd. Long story short Rett and Shepherd help break Gideon out and take down the whole crew and now Rett has 2 sons.
A couple more years later, the boys are around 11-12yrs, Pyke joins aboard and they don't initially get along in the beginning. Although Pyke comes off as very jaded and broody he is very awkward around kids, he has no idea how to handle them. Shepherd and Gideon think Pyke is kind of a jackass at first, and have no idea why Rett is so enamored by him. They warm up slowly, Pyke introducing them to his favorite comics and shows, letting Gideon assist him in tuning up the Sparrow, and helping train Shepherd in his marksman skills. Those kids have Pyke wrapped around their finger worse than Rett is, he struggles to deny them anything. They find Dandy around the time boys 17-18yrs, and it's like their little family is truly complete. Dandy adds a softness to the crew that gives way to a much needed warmth between the cold vastness of space and the harshness of bounty hunting. Kavir, Laboosh, and Chuckles soon join the crew and that's when things start getting really chaotic, in a good way. Though Gideon and Chuckles fought a lot, mostly just Gideon getting ragebaited by Chuckles, and money could on occasions get a bit tight with all their wacky adventures, they were all truly happy for a good long while.
Unfortunately, that couldn't last forever, try as he might Chuckles was getting more and more unstable and unwilling to put his friends in danger he left one night while they all slept, only a note left behind thanking them for letting him be apart of a family even for a little while. Next to leave was Laboosh and Kavir, their past as underground merchants coming back to haunt them, having made a lot of powerful enemies now coming to look for them they thought it safer to leave as they did not want to endanger the crew with their problems. Dandy was a complete mystery to them and to herself, all they could find about her was that she was some sort of Anitron bio experiment abandoned by the Empire as a total failure. Despite that she was still technically Empire "property" and over the years the Rhapsody crew has gained a sort of reputation, not a good thing if you wanted to keep a low profile from the Empire. They tried for a couple more years to keep her with them but a few too many close calls finally convinced Dandy that she needed to leave, not just for her safety but her family's as well. She found a planet filled with plants and wildlife, devoid of humanoids and far from the reach of the Empire. Dandy left and the warmth that had once filled the ship left along with her.

Currently watching SdR: Overture and I always keep hearing from the fandom how whipped Rett is for Pyke and like sure I can understand that. But nobody told me how absolutely DOWN BAD Pyke is for Rett. Bro is constantly singing his praises and following him around like a lost puppy. "Oh my partner is so smart!" "My partner is so cool!" "My partner is awesome and strong and reliable and did I mention smart!" Also, yall like to say how Rett can't say no to Pyke, can we talk about how Pyke does not even MOVE without Rett is approval. He's basically like "whatever you want babe. Anything at all. You want me to kill this guy for you? Say less." Then he's always constantly searching for him, always at his heel, always just sitting and admiring watching him. "Where are you going Rett? Can I come too? How am I going to protect you if I'm not with you?"
