Australia Day 2026 violently exposes deep national divisions If the aim of Australia Day is to promote national unity and social cohesion, writes Dave Donovan, then it ain't working.

"If you wanted a unified nation, you would not start with politicians expressing these hateful views for cynical objectives, showing an utter lack of civic responsibility and good faith."

Perth Invasion Day rally bomb incident investigated as ‘potential terrorist act’, police say Federal police flag further changes possible after footage released of alleged bomb being thrown

The hypocrisy is blatant. The only difference between THIS and the Bondi beach shootings is that the IED did not explode as intended.

And #SurvivalDay 2026 was a special event, sobering, reflective & uplifting. Well done to all the participants, especially the younger ones. I hope they all felt the love & respect of the substantial crowd. A glimpse into the "always was..." of Ballaarat's long history before colonisation..

Fuck Australia Day. Thinking of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people today, and all of their ancestors who were killed in Australia’s genocide which began today, Jan 26, 1788 when the first fleet landed. Today is not a day to celebrate.

In 1915, Ellen "Ellie" Wharton Kirke MBE, née Clements, mother of four servicemen, thought up the idea of a national day, with the specific aim of raising funds for wounded soldiers, and the term was coined to stir up patriotic feelings. In 1915 a committee to celebrate Australia Day was formed, and the date chosen was 30 July, on which many fund-raising efforts were run to support the war effort. It was also held in July in subsequent years of World War I: on 28 July 1916, 27 July 1917, and 26 July 1918."

Sovereignty was never ceded. We've changed the date several times throughout history - we can do it again, with intent, empathy and acknowledgement of our past.

Thanks for turning out in big numbers #Naarm to acknowledge that the 26th was the date of the colonial invasion of the country we call Australia. The national use of the date is recent. We don’t have to party of the day that signalled the start of genocide. #SurvivalDay #Auspol #Melbourne

#AustraliaDay 26Jan is the day the British established a penal colony in Sydney. It is a #DayOfMourning for First Nations peoples: invasion, dispossession, colonisation, genocide. Mourn with those who mourn. 😔 #InvasionDay #SurvivalDay
