Artificial Sweeteners and Weight Loss: The Benefits, The Risks, and the Gut Shift In today's episode we're examining the revolutionary SWEET study, the largest randomized controlled trial designed to clarify the impact of artificial sweeteners. Observational data previously raised major health concerns, but this new research indicates that these substitutes can modestly aid in weight loss maintenance, challenging the prior belief that they should be conditionally recommended against for weight control.  We detail why the trial found no adverse effects on key metabolic markers like blood pressure or fasting glucose. Crucially, we explore the surprising effects on the gut microbiome: an increase in beneficial SCFA-producing bacteria, alongside a concerning shift toward methane producers that may cause gastrointestinal discomfort.  We conclude whether artificially sweetened drinks are a viable, and potentially preferable, option to sugary drinks.
