Mahoney, who was first a stuntman and double for such big screen actors like Gregory Peck, was by the early 1960s an established actor of television and B-movies, and had played an adversary to Gordon Scott’s ape-man in “Tarzan the Magnificent,” before he was cast as the 13th actor to play the character on-film. The Tarzan franchise had been under new tutelage by this time, Sol Lesser having retired. The new producer steering the apeman’s film image was Sy Weintraub, who aimed to mold a globetrotting aspect to the franchise. Mahoney’s two outings were thus set in two (sub)tropical locales far from sub-Saharan Africa: India, and “Three Challenges in Thailand. He did much of his own stunts on set, granting an air of authenticity to the on-screen action. Mahoney was unique among Tarzan actors, being in his forties when he was cast. To wit, he holds the record for oldest actor to portray the character (44). This was taken note of in the press, especially with “Three Challenges,” where his trying on-set bout with dysentery and dengue fever had cut his weight down by nearly 50 pounds. Following this, Mahoney bowed out of the role. He would later act as stunt coordinator on another Tarzan flick, 1981’s “Tarzan the Apeman.”

“Escapes” was a film built on compromise, as it was essentially created under pressure from the newly reinvigorated and enforced Hollywood Production Code. Initially conceived and shot as “The Capture of Tarzan,” test screenings of this early production drew criticism for seemingly excessive violence and horror elements, including a scene with large man-eating bats! This early treatment was scrapped, and production restarted with the story largely changed with more compliance to the pleasure of censorship. Most clearly among these changes was Jane’s new singlet burlap dress, her two piece from “Tarzan and His Mate” likely having been deemed too risqué.
