Photo of a red-brick single-storey building on Jetty Road in the suburb of Glenelg. It’s a bright, sunny afternoon; the sky is a clear, deep blue. The wall facing the street is painted pale pink. On the footpath a cluster of tall flowers, a dozen or so, stretch up almost to roof height. You can walk between them, as if they are a tiny forest. Their stems are white-painted steel, their petals made of stained glass. Sunlight casts multicolored flower shadows onto the pink wall and the pavement. Photo by me.

Sunset at Glenelg beach. A broad expanse of pale sand is marked by dozens of footprint trails, intersecting and meandering towards the water. Neat parallel furrows show where the sand was raked early this morning. The setting sun casts shadows from every sandy step and ripple. Photo by me.

View across a clean beach of pale sand on a sunny afternoon. A few people are sitting in groups, facing the water. Early this morning the sand was raked: tyre tracks and rake lines are still visible, running parallel to the waterline. In the foreground, a modest border of native scrub is broken by two pathways giving access to the beach. From these access points, footprints lead in multiple directions, recording the meandering of walkers, swimmers and other beach users. Their tracks split, cross, follow, and tangle. Tomorrow they’ll be erased. Photo by me.

Dining table on a hotel balcony overlooking Glenelg beach. Off to the left, out of shot, a temporary stage is set up on the beach and a couple of thousand festival goers are grooving on the well-groomed sand. On my table are a glass of sparkling wine from the Adelaide Hills region and a plate piled with crackers and a selection of Maggie Beer vintage cheeses. It’s a brilliant sunny summer afternoon. Age and introversion may disqualify me from the mosh, but there are other ways to enjoy a beachy music festival. Next up: The Grogans, then Skeggs and Ocean Alley.

View across calm sea water. The sun has well and truly set and we’re gloaming for all we’re worth. A small smear of cloud lurks low in the distance; other than that, the sky is summer clear. An intense band of red, orange, gold sprawls along the horizon, fading up into blue, grey, night. Subtle pale crepuscular rays point to where the sun plunged into the water. To your right, a single white star glitters amongst the fiery remnants of the day. Photo by me.

Crepuscular sunset and the evening star (zoom to spot it amongst the glow, over on the right).

The calm sea is dark grey, pushing up against the last golden haze of sunset. In the clear, darkening sky a passenger jet flies low, heading north-west. Even higher, a bright white streak of water vapor reveals a second aircraft: this one looks seems to be heading, rocket-like, straight up to the stars. (It’s an illusion: it’s actually moving south.) Photo by me.

A university forecourt on North Terrace in Adelaide. A long rectangular pool is constructed of dark grey basalt, with a row of palm plants along its long side. In the background, a handful of people stroll across the paved courtyard towards one of the distant buildings. Trees, mostly out of view, create dappled shade and sunny patches. The pool is constantly refreshed by a series of water jets, each squirting a thin stream of water up and over into a parabolic curve, splashing into the pool. Together they form a sparkling tunnel above the pool. On the right of the photo, individual drops of water are clearly visible as they stretch and plunge through the air. Photo by me.

Splashy splashy on a warm summer afternoon.

(Ludicrously pleased with how the camera captured those individual droplets on the right.)

Sunset over a calm sea. Small waves ripple onto the sandy beach, reflecting golden-orange light from above. The water is dark grey, forming a sharply delineated horizon against the thick low mist in the distance. A few fluffy clouds drift low in an otherwise clear, pale sky. The setting sun casts crepuscular rays in yellow, gold and orange, and the undersides of the grey clouds are limned in fiery molten hues. A peaceful end to a summer afternoon in Tarndanya Adelaide on Kaurna country. Photo by me.
