I returned to Melbourne from Flinders Island yesterday and missed the visit of this swift parrot. Don't know if it's the same bird we saw there in June but pretty nice to have around! #rarebirds #birds #Australianbirds #parrots #Tasmanianbirds

Clearly the magpie thinks she's booked the pool and is explaining this to the two green rosellas. Not sure how it was resolved. #ausbirds #australianbirds #Tasmanianbirds #parrots

Another currawong, demonstrating the graceful way the come in for a landing. It worked, though. #australianbirds #tasmanianbirds

Here's the kookaburra a bit after the last shot, deciding that the little birds buzzing him were too annoying. #kookaburra #australianbirds #tasmanianbirds

We don't usually get kookaburras at our watering spot on Flinders Island, but this one dropped by. The little wrens, firetails and small honeyeaters were not too pleased by the visitor and he soon took off. #kookaburra #australianbirds #kingfishers #tasmanianbirds

Got some photos of the scarlet robin that visits us in winter.
Not brilliant but I’m so glad to have seen him!
Just with my iPhone coz I don’t have anything better.

This is very typical in my mother's kitchen. A random set of falcon legs between the serving and cooking ware

Photo of a small yellow, black and grey bird perching on a small branch. In its tiny black beak is an immature insect that's light orange with dark red spots down the sides and green eyes.

Photo of another small yellow, black and grey bird perching on a small branch. In this one's beak is a reddish-brown spider with its legs sticking out in all directions.

The pardalotes are back to feed their babies. Today's meal options are insect larva or spider.

Photo of two small birds perched on a lichen-covered branch with bright green leaves. They are pale grey with black on the top of the head and wing feathers, and bright yellow under the chin, above the beak and on a dot halfway down the side of the wings. One is facing to the right and the other to the left. Drizzling raindrops are falling and both have wet face feathers.

On this drizzly day, the pardalote babies are warm and comfy (and a bit noisy) in the walls of my study but the parents still need to go out to collect food.

🌏 Tawny frogmouth (Podargus strigoides)

Tawny frogmouths are stocky, nocturnal birds with a wide, flat beak and large, yellow eyes. Their mottled grey, white, black, and rufous plumage provides excellent camouflage as they perch on tree branches during the day. They are native to Australia and Tasmania and are often mistaken for owls due to their appearance and nocturnal habits. GG 2024 (Edited)

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)
