Looking out into a mall concourse. The escalators are blocked off, with directions to a nearby elevator (also out of order). Empty storefronts abound, with the skylights allowing light to shine in from the sky above.

Irreversible damage.

While two of her older sisters celebrated their 50th year this week (albeit one falling short as an operational center), it's doubtful if The Mall at Tuttle Crossing will reach that milestone, let alone 30 years.

The north central court of Fairlane Town Center. A network of ramps and stairs connect the levels, and the court is capped by a disco bulb lined Octa-Loft elevator. The mall's majestic fountain used to be at the bottom of the frame, but was removed in 2013 for the contemporary searing you see here. Since this photo was taken, the wooden handrails have been painted a matte black.

The central court of Lakeside Mall, showing the 2020 refurbished fountain in full glory, which dates to the mall's opening. While the elevator is out of commission, and various storefronts have changed over the years, this scene remains largely unchanged from the mall's opening. Upon its closure, Lakeside was the last Taubman mall with 90% of its original features intact.

A belated happy birthday to two Taubman gems, both opened 50 years ago on March 2nd, 1976.

Fairlane Town Center heads towards a murky future under mall slumlord Kohan, and Lakeside is closed awaiting demolition.

I'm seeing a jump in technique and, arguably, artistry, since #Taubman has become better known in the past 30 years (e.g., Yuja Wang). Merely a correlation but a pause for consideration. #pianists

Angular plaster details make up the majority of the design language, contrasted with chome pillars and a grand row of clear skylights, offset with colored panels throughout.

Fancier versions of Taubman's signature conversational seating enclosures grace the hallways and anchor courts. In addition to lights for the plant and flower beds, tablesude lamps are provided for shoppers needing to sit and relax.

MacArthur's Parked.

Closing June 30th, 2026 to pave way for redevelopment by the City of Norfolk.

This was the last mall built by Taubman Centers using their trademark geometric, space age interior design language. Link in comments.

I had a chance to visit the wonderful Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Virginia not too long ago and create a sketch of one of John Singer Sargent's 1888 paintings: Portrait of Mrs. George Gribble (Norah).

The only view one can now see inside Lakeside Mall is from the glass of its sole survivor, JCPenney. The mall interior closed last summer, pending redevelopment.

Fairlane Town Center, Dearborn. A Taubman mall that opened in March 1976(& 1 day apart from Lakeside Mall opening day), & still looks original! Unlike certain Taubmans(i.e. Fair Oaks & Woodfield), I'm glad this is still largely unremodeled. A rare Kohan mall to still have good occupancy. #taubman
