In the bayside town of FanSan, each household kept by its door a small box painted the color of ripe Moro. Within rested humble instruments: a lantern of steady beam, a radio that sang when cranked by hand, a folded chart of streets and high ground, a roll of names writ fair, and stout power bars wrapped in thrifty paper. Common things. Unlauded things. Until the night the wind forgot its manners. It came striding in from the sea like an uninvited lord, rattling shutters and snapping branches as though they were dry breadsticks. The lamps flickered and surrendered. The sky bruised to the shade of spilled ink. Then, in dwelling after dwelling, the orange boxes were opened. Families and neighbors gathered close, ringed about their open boxes as knights about a round table, riding out the gale’s last blustering charges. Lanterns cast their brave white circles. Radios crackled with tidings from the kingdom’s NWS Guard, whose herald proclaimed, “The High Wind Warning has passed. It is now safe to go abroad." By morning the storm had spent its fury. The town stood rumpled and muddy, a few shingles carried off like errant hats. Doors opened. Neighbors knocked and reckoned one another as carefully as merchants counting gold. And not a soul was missing. Thereafter, travelers would ask, “What enchantment shields fair FanSan?” The townsfolk would smile and lay a fond hand upon their bright boxes. “Preparedness,” they would say. “The quietest kind of courage.”
