Miracle in month. 1947.
Miracle in month. 1947. Miracle in a month. Helen B. Taussig Collection, item no. 265883. Date: 1947. This film was compiled by parents of a young boy with the congenital heart defect tetralogy of Fallot, also known as "blue baby syndrome". The film was completed in 1947 and dedicated to surgeon Alfred Blalock and pediatric cardiologist Helen Taussig, who along with surgical technician Vivien Thomas developed the ground breaking procedure. The film shows home movies of the young boy on his third birthday and every subsequent birthday from 1938-1946, at which time the child in deteriorating health was admitted to Johns Hopkins for surgery. The film then shows the boy coming home from his operation in good health and walking by himself from the train. Finally, we see the healthy boy 3 months after his operation playing and riding a bike. Aside from its medical interest, the film is also notable for wartime references, such as the child dressed as a Navy officer, and wearing a toy gas mask. Inter-titles explain each scene. Film was preserved through a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation, 2017.

Beautiful video of the natural disease history and evolution after #BlalockTaussigShunt in a boy with #TetralogyOfFallot in 1947. Video preserved by @JHMedArchives @HopkinsMedicine and available via:
