#Tetrapod breakwater, #SantaCruz (California) Harbor, and the Walton Lighthouse. The shape of these concrete behemoths helps dissipate the force of crashing waves by allowing water to flow around. Tangled tetrapods also resist displacement, to form an enduring barrier.

A series of blockdiagrams illustrating the development (from the phase 1 to phase 3) of the Ploužnice Lake as interpreted from the studied sections (Kyje–Ploužnice railway cut, Štikov roadcut) and data on the Ploužnice Horizon by Blecha et al. (1997). The alternation of wet and dry climate phases that controlled the extent of the Ploužnice Lake, has already been interpreted from contemporaneous deposits of the Líně Formation in central Bohemia (Nádaskay et al., 2025). Close-ups provide a detailed interpretation of the depositional environment in which the trackmakers roamed and left their trace fossils.

a small blue four-footed structure cast roughly in wax, still surrounded by two out of four of its mould pieces. Excess wax can be seen blocking the filling port at right. There's a small holed in the object near the centre where an internal void has formed as the wax cooled and contracted. This might be as much as 10% of the total model volume
Semi-successful tetrapod cast using surplus crayons in a 3d printed mould.
Bad surface finish and the filler sprue is blocked. This meant that the wax had to form a void somewhere as it cooled/contracted. The small hole near the centre of the cast is a void, probably 10% of the volume

Top: A fire-bellied newt (Cynops ensicauda) photographed on Amami Island (Japan). A recent study suggested that the extinction of this and other genera was part of a mass extinction event that threatens human survival. In fact, this genus is not extinct. Image credit: John Wiens. Bottom: Patterns of genus-level extinctions over time among recent decades. Each column shows the number of genus-level extinctions in that decade. It shows patterns only for those groups with the most genus-level extinctions, and only from the 1800s to 2010s. There were relatively few extinctions before the 1800s in most groups, except birds and mammals.
Are extinctions of #tetrapod genera rapidly accelerating? This study analyzes recent #extinctions, across plant & animal genera, showing that extinctions were mostly on islands, were predominantly of #birds & #mammals, and have declined over the last century @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4g9Ee8x

A black and white coelacanth swimming slightly forward and down in a tight C curve. The style is strongly reminiscent of Japanese style koi tattoos.
I wanted to try my hand at the fairly classic koi tattoo but with a personal twist. This one depicts a coelacanth which are lobe-finned fish known as "living fossils". They're relatives of our own fish ancestors prior to our lineage leaving the water. #art #coelacanth #tattoo #tetrapod #paleontology

Relationships between the type of genetic sex-determination (GSD) system, adult sex ratio (ASR), and sex bias in demographic traits across tetrapods. Left: Phylogenetic distribution of the six variables across 453 tetrapod species. The innermost color circle shows the type of GSD (XX/XY and ZZ/ZW sex-chromosome systems abbreviated as XY and ZW, respectively), whereas the outer circles illustrate sex biases shown as female (red, negative values) or male (blue, positive values) bias, in the following order from inner circle to outer circle: ASR, birth sex ratio (both sex ratios depicted as deviations from 1:1), and sex differences in juvenile and adult mortality and maturation age. Right: Differences in ASR and other demographic traits between XY and ZW systems, shown as violin plots.
Why are tetrapods with ZZ/ZW sex-determination systems more male-skewed than XY/XX? Phylogenetic analyses of a large dataset of wild #tetrapod species reveal that #SexDetermination systems influence adult #SexRatio via sex-biased adult mortality @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/43qTysJ
