#RomanFortThursday

The #Romans built a fortress in AD 29 on the site of an earlier #Thracian settlement and kept its name, Durostorum. Durostorum became an important #military center of the #Roman province of Moesia, and grew into a city at the time of Marcus Aurelius.

The article below adds some fascinating detail to the rule of the #Thracian king Seuthes III, whose bronze portrait head, greaves and helmet I've photographed, below. He straddled multiple cultures, as the treasures from his tomb attest. 🏺

A striking #Roman cavalry helmet & mask, 1st C - Philippopolis (Plovdiv, Bulgaria). Found in a tomb, it may have belonged to a #Thracian auxiliary. Once thought purely ceremonial, helmets like this may have also seen battle. Philippopolis was known as Trimontium—like our own #Trimontium in Scotland.

This gold pectoral was placed on top of a bronze cuirass. It has an oval lower edge and a triangular upper edge with a notch in the middle; an embossed decoration to the left depicts a lion with its head lowered, seen from above. The head, the mane, and the shoulder are stylized in a geometric manner. At both ends there are perforations for attachment to a lost base. Until recently it was presumed that the pectoral, attached to an iron plate, was protecting the upper chest in the manner of the Mezek-type gorget-pectorals.

The gold pectoral, attached to a leather base, was probably not a functional part of the cuirass but was placed on top of it as a status symbol or perhaps for some ritual purpose.

This gold #Thracian pectoral features a very abstract image of a lion, presumably giving strength to whomever wore it. It was laid across a cuirass in a high-status warrior's tomb in the Bashova Tumulus, Bulgaria. 475-425 BCE. 🏺 #Ancientbluesky
