Waitangi copy. This is the Treaty document that was first signed at Waitangi on February 6, 1840. Over 40 northern rangatira (tribal leaders) signed it that day. By September over 240 chiefs at Te Waimata, Hokianga, and Kaitaia, and Waitematā, and Tāmaki in the Hauraki Gulf area. A facsimile of the document was made and published in 1877. Some time after that, the original was misplaced. When found again, in 1908, the treaty was much the worse for wear - water damaged and gnawed by rats. On this beautiful hot and sunny Waitangi Day three of us rode our bikes over to Gelato Lab in Opawa and sat in the shade in nearby Hansen Park.
