Cartoon. Title: “Short and Curlies” Picture shows PM Christopher Luxon, in his bathroom, trying to look at a growth on his back (the architect of the Treaty Principles Bill, David Seymour). He is saying, “I thought it’d just fester and fade, but I don’t know, it’s looking kind of … smug”

I counted 16 waka this morning at #Waitangi Day celebrations. An annual congress of chiefs was established here in 1835 at the signing of He Whakaputanga, even before
#tetiriti was signed in 1840.

Waitangi copy.
This is the Treaty document that was first signed at Waitangi on February 6, 1840. Over 40 northern rangatira (tribal leaders) signed it that day. By September over 240 chiefs at Te Waimata, Hokianga, and Kaitaia, and Waitematā, and Tāmaki in the Hauraki Gulf area. A facsimile of the document was made and published in 1877. Some time after that, the original was misplaced. When found again, in 1908, the treaty was much the worse for wear - water damaged and gnawed by rats.

In July 2022, as a birthday treat to myself, I made the trip to #Waitangi. Here are a couple of my photos from my visit. I encourage everyone to go at least once in your lifetime #ToitūTeTiriti

Shane Jones & NZ First promise a full frontal assault on Te Tiriti o Waitangi if they win power again. Note under this govt, Treaty of Waitangi clauses were removed & weakened at least 27 times already #nzpol #kiwi #waitangi

Treaty House at Waitangi from the air, 1934.
Photographer	Frank Douglas Mill (1899-1990), glass plate negative, Waitākere Central Library, Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections FDM-0337-G

Attributed to Douglas Mill but it is known that on occasion his wife Audrey would operate the camera, by leaning out of the open cockpit, while her husband himself piloted the plane. Douglas and Audrey Mill operated their air transport and survey business from a hangar at Hobsonville Point between 1927-1937.

I was at #Waitangi Treaty Grounds today, celebrating a #NewZealand that will be 186 years old this Friday. It's a day for all the people of NZ. Lovely vibe, and so many families having fun. The museum's eye-opening, I hadn't it visited before.
