Incredible work by PhD student David Pedley (University of Canterbury, #ucnz) and our co-author Dr. Mirjam Schindler (Victoria University of Wellington)
It's been a minute, or several... Congratulations to the rest of the "class of 2025", numbers 93 (Francis), 94 (Baxter), 95 (Josie), 96 (Samaneh) and the very last 97 (Rongqing). From Medtech to OffshoreTech, and Energy Systems in between

Today #ucnz is hosting careers advisors from across the country and my research group is telling them all about how we use remote sensing to measure and monitor forests. We use drones equipped with laser scanners, multispectral sensors, and thermal sensors to understand forest dynamics.
My university, #ucnz, is putting on a series of really interesting talks at this annual Raising the Bar event. Grab a coffee, pint, wine, or cocktail at your local and hear 20 leading academics talk about AI, penguins, space tourism, and more. www.rtbevent.com/rtbchch2025

Great day with congratulations to Matt, now known as #92, or Dr #92 if we are being formal, after his oral PhD exam today!
With recognition of all the usual suspects... #UCNZ, #UCEngineering
To #UCNZ PG Student Joseph who just emailed all staff, kudos to your bravery! Keep them honest, express your academic freedom #solidarity.
Approaching #Qomolangma from the North. Also known as Sagarmatha or Mt Everest. Photo from 2018 trip with #UQ #SEES Don't forget that there are only 11 days to submit an abstract to www.confer.co.nz/2026/icg2026/ in New Zealand #geomorphology #geology #NewZealand #UCNZ
Your #NewZealand #Aotearoa #geomorphology image for today. This is the Binser Fan in the Waimakariri Valley. The lines on the front of the fan are former lake beaches of 'Glacial' Lake Speight. Find out more on a fieldtrip at

To brighten your day, a #NewZealand #geomorphology picture. This is a relict #gravelbeach near Kaikoura, raised above the active #coastal zone by the 14th November 2016 Mw 7.8 #earthquake. The new beach is at far left.

New Zealand #geomorphology is dominated by our position on a plate margin, but it wasn't always so. Here is some #karst in #Oligocene limestone near Takaka in NW South Island. Do you know why some of the karst is sharp (rillenkarren) and some soft (rundkarren)? #NewZealand #UCNZ

Have our scientists in little old Ōtautahi Christchurch just up ended a long standing physics theory?

A little bit of #NewZealand #Aotearoa #geomorphology to brighten your day. The Ferintosh rock glacier in the Ben Ohau range. From a great fieldtrip in Feb 23 with Doug Clark, Jo Hanson and Marek Ewertowski. #rockglacier #alpine #ucnz
Over the last few days I have had the opportunity explore Central Otago, New Zealand. The focus of this has been to investigate ancient glacial deposits and to extract samples for cosmogenic dating to assist with my future thesis.

Heather Purdie and Tim Kerr (adjunct) from my School at #UCNZ have undertaken #mass-balance monitoring on the Rolleston #Glacier, in #NewZealand for the last 14 years. In 2024, the winter balance is 2.5 metres of water equivalent. This is below the average of the past 14 years. Photo H. Purdie.
