Velvet Shank mushrooms (Flammulina velutipes) at Wrington Warren today. These fungi are one of the only edible species around at this time of year and can survive being frozen solid.

I’ve long wanted to find one of these. It’s an ear pick fungus, #auriscalpiumvulgare that grows on pine cones. In looks a lot bigger in the photo than it actually is, about 1cm tall with the cap about half a cm wide. #ukfungi #pineconefungi

Small mushroom growing out of branches on the forest floor. The cap is orange-red with small white scales around the outer edge of the cap. The stem is white with the lower two thirds woolly in texture.
This pretty little mushroom is a Redlead Roundhead (surely should be Wooly socked scaly foxcap) aka Stropharia aurantiaca. This fungus grows out of rotting wood and can be found in clusters - what a stunner! The cap really is a orangey/red as the photo shows. #ukfungi

Lots of different coloured mushrooms in a whole range of different shapes and sizes. Some look like coral, others like cauliflowers or little cream coloured balls. There are some that look like jellies or turkey’s tails.

Tall, cream, beige and brown mushrooms. The caps are still closed so are curled down and look like large drumsticks. The caps have brown scales on the top. They are growing in grass by the side of a footpath.
Parasol mushrooms (Macrolepiota procera) - these tasty mushrooms are incredibly tall (up to 25cm) with very large caps (15-35cm). These ones have their caps still curled under so they look like timpani drumsticks. They always make me marvel at their size every time I see them. Pretty common #ukfungi
More beautiful Fly agarics today - look at this gorgeous group! As beautiful as any flower in my opinion. We are having an amazing autumn for fungi generally but the numbers of Fly agarics is incredible. Hope you can head out into the woods to see them this week. #ukfungi

Fly agarics (Amanita muscaria) aren’t rare by any means but they are absolutely stunning mushrooms. They are at their peak right now in southern England and the woods are full of these beauties.

Mull - from the plantation around Ardmore Bay. Fungi I cannot name but possibly @waxcapscooch.bsky.social can please? The red one had the circumfrence of a football! The one next to it looked like a Dorset Knob. The third fungi had a green tint to it and the last pretty colourless. #ukfungi
