This early painting is typical of van Gogh’s art in 1885. Atmospheric, with hard-to-distinguish details, his early paintings reflect his admiration for 17th century Dutch landscapes.
Using a low horizon line with a dark foreground, the luminous sky becomes the star of the show. In 1886 – the year after this painting was completed, Vincent moved to Paris where his love of expressive color truly blossomed.

The Pink Orchard (also known as Orchard with Blossoming Apricot Trees) painted by Vincent van Gogh in April 1888.
Inspired by Nature: Upon arriving in Arles, Van Gogh was captivated by the blossoming orchards, prompting him to create a series of paintings dedicated to the season's beauty.
Artistic Influence: This specific work, often titled The Pink Orchard or Orchard in Blossom (Apricot Trees), showcases the intense energy of spring and reflects his admiration for Japanese prints through its angular branches.
Emotional State: In letters to his brother Theo, Van Gogh described feeling "in a fury of work," using his art to find joy and capture the Provençal countryside.
Cultural Significance: The painting is now recognized as a highlight of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, representing his transition to a brighter, post-impressionist style.

In this drawing (with graphine, pen, brush and ink), Vincent is still drawing trees in a realistic style. What is new is the way his strokes evoke wind and motion in the sky, creating a kind of haze through which we see the scene. During his time later at Saint-Rémy asylum in Provence (1889 – 1890), pine trees took on an added meaning to van Gogh as he struggled with his mental health. Pine trees came to symbolize strength and endurance – sometimes depicted with broken and damaged branches – but in this earlier drawing the pines are (mostly) whole.

This pen and ink with pencil drawing is an early work. Vincent was the son of a Protestant minister and, before focusing on art as a career, the son followed in his father’s footsteps as a lay minister and evangelist. Vincent was deeply religious and he came to see God in nature. His early sketches and drawings are realistic and precise. He said of his drawings of pollard trees (“pollard” being a pruning technique) that they reminded him of “processions of almshouse men”, with their arms raised in prayer.

Vincent #vanGogh was also a poet. It's amazing how we can overlook some of a person's gifts because of their sheer volume. They have so many we overlook the 'lesser' ones.
