The Constitution limited voting to landed white males -6% of the population. The 13th,14th,&15th,&19th Amendments changed that.
Jim Crow laws are how felons (black men) lost their right to vote. 13% of the population is black >50% have felonies!

Johnson was talking about voting rights. This was only a week after Bloody Sunday when hundreds of peaceful marchers in Selma, Alabama were set upon and viciously beaten by police. The demonstrators were calling on authorities to let people of color register to vote, something the segregationist leaders of Alabama would not allow.
So, President Johnson wrote the Voting Rights Act, which authorized the federal government to protect the voting rights long denied in southern states, like Alabama.
In his speech on this day in 1965, Johnson used the language of the voting rights movement to call on lawmakers to support the movement. And they did, though it required Johnson to spend six months politically twisting the arms of some representatives and senators.
US President Lyndon Baines Johnson addresses a joint session of Congress on March 15, 1965. The speech, titled "The American Promise," detailed the need for the Voting Rights Act, which LBJ had written over the previous week after Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama Video and audio of the full address are available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NvPhiuGZ6I

Does it matter what Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett says outside of the Supreme Court when the Chief Justice is tearing apart the #VotingRightsAct bit by bit, FAR from "calling balls and strikes"? A corrupt Court, aligned with a corrupt president!

Well, it's a former quasi-democracy that existed for almost 60 years (1965* - 2025). In a #democracy, the right to vote does not depend on gender and skin colour, and gerrymandering is not an option. The value of a vote does not depend on where one lives.

🚨 60 years after upholding the #VotingRightsAct, today’s Supreme Court has gutted key voter protections.
Once a powerful tool against racial discrimination, it’s now weakened, leaving millions of Americans of color at greater risk of disenfranchisement.

Thank you for sharing this! I have to add sth. #Tyrannicide is an option when the alternative is WorldWarIII. The world cannot afford the current US regime that destroyed a young* near*-democracy.
*1965-2025 #VotingRightsAct, #democracy OR #gerrymandering. Can't have both.

On March 7, 1965, a peaceful march for voting rights became "Bloody Sunday". One of many reasons I will always vote, for me their sacrifice for my right to vote will never be taken for granted. #Selma #VotingRights #VotingRightsAct #JohnLewis
It took about 100 yrs after #14ththAmendments for #VotingRightsAct. And the #VRA may be further stripped by SCOTUS.
The #ReverendJesseJackson always took "the harder path"; he was honored by the inspiring speeches of former presidents #Clinton #Obama & #Biden. #equalrights #hope #change

🕯️Today, #TheMarchContinues as we honor Bernard LaFayette, a #FreedomRider and Selma #VotingRights organizer who helped secure the #VotingRightsAct of 1965.
From pushing for desegregation & advancing Black Americans' voting rights, when faced with threats and fear, LaFayette remained steadfast.
#Tampa native #BernardLaFayette, the advance man who did the risky groundwork for the voter registration campaign in #Selma, Alabama, that culminated in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, has died.
