New @PriceofOil deep dive: The @IEA's new report #WEO20 is a significant, small step forward - but the world needed a giant leap.
Will @IEABirol #FixTheWEO in 2021? Here's how he could do it: priceofoil.org/2020/10/22/weo-2020-a-sm...
In #WEO20, the @IEA has taken baby steps forward, when the world needed giant leaps. #FixTheWEO https://bit.ly/2InEbdv
"The @IEA is determined to be the global leader of clean energy transformations around the world." - @IEABirol
Big call. But if you want to lead, you need to #FixTheWEO and make NZE2050 a fully fledged, central scenario. #WEO20
How can you look at this @IEA graph and not click that we need to governments manage the decline in fossil fuel production, not just demand?
This is chart another key step forward in this year's World Environment Outlook, along with NZE50.
#WEO20 #FixTheWEO
The @IEA isn't wrong in the big picture here. The @IPCC_CH said two years ago that limiting warming to #1o5c would require action at unprecedented scale.
But, what the IPCC said and the IEA didn't is: The human, ecological, and economic costs of inaction are much higher. #WEO20
Bad news: Even reaching the SDS line here is off track for the Paris Agreement's 1.5ºC ambition. That's the NZE2050 line.
Good news: The @IEA has consistently underestimated the pace and scale of #climate action and energy transformation.
#WEO20 #FixTheWEO
This very problematically equates the SDS scenario with meeting the Paris Agreement goals.
It doesn't.
The Net Zero Emissions by 2050 case could - but it needs to be fully fledged. https://bit.ly/33LuOu8 #WEO20 #FixTheWEO
"Now, more than ever major producing companies need to seize the moment and diversify your economies...", says the @IEA, still talking around managing the decline in fossil fuels, but not...quite...getting...it. #WEO20 #FixTheWEO
Oil execs reading #WEO20 be like...
The @IEA's framing still betrays its fossil-fueled origins (and biases). Talk of "erased" oil demand versus "recovery" in oil demand, not of an unstable boom-bust market burning people and communities - and abandoning polluting infrastructure. #WEO20
"There is no such rebound for coal..." - @IEA
This needs to be true for all fossil fuels. Yet instead the IEA waxes lyrical about the gas-as-a-bridge-fuel myth... #WEO20
"We were all happy to see that the Chinese government came up with net zero by 2060 targets..." - @IEABirol
China aims to reach net zero a decade before the @IEA's "Sustainable Development Scenario" predicts the world will!
Stop forecasting #climate failure! #FixTheWEO #WEO20
Right now, @IEABirol is talking his way around the need for governments to manage the decline in fossil fuel production, but somehow, somehow not quite saying it.
We need government action to cut oil demand. And oil supply. That's it. That's the tweet. #WEO20 #FixTheWEO
"More and more governments around the world are pledging to get emissions to net zero by 2050..." - @IEABirol
Strangely, then, the @IEA #WEO20 *still* doesn't include a full scenario for net zero emissions by 2050.
I imagine that @IEABirol is right that the scars of the #COVID19 pandemic will be with us for many years to come - as too will be the wounds from the #climate crisis, unless governments step in to manage the decline of fossil fuels. #WEO20 #FixTheWEO
If the @IEA is committed to a safe #climate future, #1o5C must be front and centre.
@IEABirol, it is time to #FixTheWEO! #WEO20
