Oldest known whale recording could unlock mysteries of the ocean Researchers say the discovery of the oldest known recordings of whale sounds could open up a new understanding of how the huge animals communicate.

While testing a SONAR system off Bermuda in 1949, scientists made the first known recording of whale songs. At the time, they didn't know what they were hearing. The recording also reveals how much quieter the ocean was back then.
