Shane's breath came in short, choppy bursts.Then something cold nudged his fingers. The woman-- Irina-- was still there. She was crouched in front of him, a careful distance away, her arm outstretched. A glass of water touched his knuckles. He'd wound up curled in on himself, his shaking hands clinging to his drawn-up knees. He took the glass without thinking. It felt real enough in his palm, cold and a little damp. Shane stared at the tiny bubbles that clung to the sides of the glass. They sparkled in the light. Could his brain cook up something this realistic while bleeding into itself? Was it possible to hallucinate the chill that seeped into his palm, the smooth, hard glass, the faintest noise of air bubbles popping on the water's trembling surface? Irina retreated, watching him carefully, moving a few paces away. She stayed at his level, crouched low, though she didn't sit down. Smart, Shane thought distantly. Keeping her feet on the floor, ready to spring up and run at a moment's notice. Her heels weren't touching the floor at all. She'd clearly not done any of the yoga stretches he liked. She said a Russian word he didn't know. Then she put her hand on her chest and breathed exaggeratedly, slow and steady, lengthening her exhales. The necklace gleamed golden at her throat. Right. Right. Breathing. He should do that some time. Shane was holding a glass of water that Irina Rozanov had handed to him. That was... happening right now. No, wait. Rozanova.

Stede, of course, had snuck down here to enjoy the flowers grown for the celebration before people started arriving and he couldn't be seen doing anything so passe, but Nigel shouldn't have been there. Unless… "I, of course, have been asked to oversee the process," and, ah, yes, there it is. "These idiots need someone keeping an eye on them who has some modicum of taste." As if Nigel had a hint of taste anywhere in his body, with his stupidly garish buttercup doublet, paired with completely the wrong shade of blue hose. Buttercups were gorgeous, sweet little things and a favorite of Stede's, but somehow Nigel made them look cheap and tawdry. "How lucky they have you, then." Nigel cut a glance at him, and Stede made sure his face was open, innocent. A little bit vacant. He briefly considered fluttering his eyelashes, but that'd be laying it on so thick even Nigel would pick up on it, probably.
