‘Maul: Shadow Lord’ – Lucasfilm Marks One Week Out With New Teasers, Character Posters, and More
With one week to go until the release of _Maul: Shadow Lord,_ Lucasfilm released a new short teaser and a pair of character posters accompanied by interviews with our two main characters. Maul himself, played by the incomparable Sam Witwer, and newcomer to the franchise, Gideon Adlon, playing Twi’lek Padawan Devon Izara. The two offered some insight into where Maul and Devon find themselves during this pivotal moment for the galaxy, since it has tipped into darkness.

This comes a couple days after another spot highlighted Maul’s history and set up his quest for revenge in the new series. In case you missed it, check it out below:
_Shadow Lord_ Head Writer Matthew Michnovetz opened by stating that Witwer has been a “Jedi Master” for the cast and crew, guiding the character and the authenticity of the performance he’s owned for so many years. Michnovetz adds that “Maul and Devon is one of the more important relationships in the series and we’re excited for fans to see it. This is not going to go the way you think it is.”
That was reiterated by Supervising Director Brad Rau, who also spoke about Gideon Adlon, the voice of Devon. He said:
> “We have a dream cast. I can’t imagine any of these characters being played by anybody else. They’re incredible and it starts at the top with Sam Witwer. We’ve had the greatest time working with him and collaborating with him to keep the character authentic…
>
> Gideon is a rising star. She’s really powerful in the role of Devon and the way that she works with all of the different cast members and you see her arc through the season is pretty awesome.”

_Maul: Shadow Lord_ was initially thought to be set a year after _The Clone Wars,_ given the presence of the Inquisitor known as “The Crow,” who was killed by Ahsoka in _Tales of the Jedi._ But now Lucasfilm has begun to state that the series is set “a few years after his old Master Darth Sidious succeeded in launching the Imperial Era.” And while this is reiterated a few times throughout the article, it’s made clear that Maul is very much still reeling from the events of _The Clone Wars,_ notably the loss of his brother, Savage Opress, and Mother Talzin.

Witwer was joined by new Lucasfilm CEO and longtime animation director Dave Filoni, who commented on Maul’s relatability and how it’s kept the character alive in the minds of fans for decades, saying:
> “I think people feel bad for Maul because he’s so relatable. He makes mistakes. He’s not perfect. He desires power, and then he gets toppled. That’s relatable. You know, we all probably feel like that when we have a low moment. He just doesn’t deal with it well. He keeps trying to attack his problems the same way. He can’t ever really let go of his hatred and his anger.”

The pair discussed how the chance to explore Maul in more depth was an opportunity not to be missed, especially for Witwer, who has portrayed the character at so many different points in his storied life.
> “With Maul, we’ve seen his beginnings and we have the ending. What happened to him in between?
>
> For me, it was the promise that we were going to dig into [Maul] and answer the questions of how he changed so drastically into the Rebels version of the character… I feel like I know this guy pretty well at this point. He has the same type of feelings that you and I have, but he doesn’t have the tools to express those. All he has in front of him are supervillain tools.”
Those tools are set to serve Maul well, with his leadership on full display for his colorful, criminal coalition, and his relationship with a potential new student, Devon Izara.

Devon’s actress, Gideon Adlon, opens by showing that Devon is actually in a similarly lost place to Maul at the start of _Shadow Lord,_ making her perhaps more susceptible to his darker way of thinking.
> “Devon Izara is a Jedi in a post-Order 66 world and she is filled with angst. She’s a teenage girl living in a world where she’s trying to decipher right from wrong.”

Adlon also spoke about her connection to the character, which was evident among cast and crew when recording. She said:
> “Everyone in the room and the [recording] booth has been relating to Devon, which is very special. She makes me feel like I’m doing what I should be doing. Because of the things I’ve been through as a young girl, when I was a teenager, and as a woman, she came very easy to me. I feel like she’s like my sister. We’re very much a part of each other.”
The first two episodes of _Maul: Shadow Lord_ will drop next week, on April 6, with episodes releasing through May 4th, Star Wars Day.
