‘Maul: Shadow Lord’ – Lucasfilm Marks One Week Out With New Teasers, Character Posters, and More With one week to go until the release of _Maul: Shadow Lord,_ Lucasfilm released a new short teaser and a pair of character posters accompanied by interviews with our two main characters. Maul himself, played by the incomparable Sam Witwer, and newcomer to the franchise, Gideon Adlon, playing Twi’lek Padawan Devon Izara. The two offered some insight into where Maul and Devon find themselves during this pivotal moment for the galaxy, since it has tipped into darkness. > Maul returns in one week. > > The two-episode premiere of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, an all-new animated series, streams April 6 only on @DisneyPlus. pic.twitter.com/DHhBEnXkgu > > — Star Wars (@starwars) March 30, 2026 This comes a couple days after another spot highlighted Maul’s history and set up his quest for revenge in the new series. In case you missed it, check it out below: _Shadow Lord_ Head Writer Matthew Michnovetz opened by stating that Witwer has been a “Jedi Master” for the cast and crew, guiding the character and the authenticity of the performance he’s owned for so many years. Michnovetz adds that “Maul and Devon is one of the more important relationships in the series and we’re excited for fans to see it. This is not going to go the way you think it is.” That was reiterated by Supervising Director Brad Rau, who also spoke about Gideon Adlon, the voice of Devon. He said: > “We have a dream cast. I can’t imagine any of these characters being played by anybody else. They’re incredible and it starts at the top with Sam Witwer. We’ve had the greatest time working with him and collaborating with him to keep the character authentic… > > Gideon is a rising star. She’s really powerful in the role of Devon and the way that she works with all of the different cast members and you see her arc through the season is pretty awesome.” A scene from Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS: MAUL – SHADOW LORD, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Lucasfilm. © 2026 Lucasfilm Ltd. All Rights Reserved. _Maul: Shadow Lord_ was initially thought to be set a year after _The Clone Wars,_ given the presence of the Inquisitor known as “The Crow,” who was killed by Ahsoka in _Tales of the Jedi._ But now Lucasfilm has begun to state that the series is set “a few years after his old Master Darth Sidious succeeded in launching the Imperial Era.” And while this is reiterated a few times throughout the article, it’s made clear that Maul is very much still reeling from the events of _The Clone Wars,_ notably the loss of his brother, Savage Opress, and Mother Talzin. Character poster for Maul from Maul: Shadow Lord Witwer was joined by new Lucasfilm CEO and longtime animation director Dave Filoni, who commented on Maul’s relatability and how it’s kept the character alive in the minds of fans for decades, saying: > “I think people feel bad for Maul because he’s so relatable. He makes mistakes. He’s not perfect. He desires power, and then he gets toppled. That’s relatable. You know, we all probably feel like that when we have a low moment. He just doesn’t deal with it well. He keeps trying to attack his problems the same way. He can’t ever really let go of his hatred and his anger.” A scene still from Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS: MAUL – SHADOW LORD, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Lucasfilm Ltd. © 2026 Lucasfilm Ltd. All Rights Reserved. The pair discussed how the chance to explore Maul in more depth was an opportunity not to be missed, especially for Witwer, who has portrayed the character at so many different points in his storied life. > “With Maul, we’ve seen his beginnings and we have the ending. What happened to him in between? > > For me, it was the promise that we were going to dig into [Maul] and answer the questions of how he changed so drastically into the Rebels version of the character… I feel like I know this guy pretty well at this point. He has the same type of feelings that you and I have, but he doesn’t have the tools to express those. All he has in front of him are supervillain tools.” Those tools are set to serve Maul well, with his leadership on full display for his colorful, criminal coalition, and his relationship with a potential new student, Devon Izara. Character poster for Devon from Maul: Shadow Lord Devon’s actress, Gideon Adlon, opens by showing that Devon is actually in a similarly lost place to Maul at the start of _Shadow Lord,_ making her perhaps more susceptible to his darker way of thinking. > “Devon Izara is a Jedi in a post-Order 66 world and she is filled with angst. She’s a teenage girl living in a world where she’s trying to decipher right from wrong.” A scene still from Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS: MAUL – SHADOW LORD, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Lucasfilm Ltd. © 2026 Lucasfilm Ltd. All Rights Reserved. Adlon also spoke about her connection to the character, which was evident among cast and crew when recording. She said: > “Everyone in the room and the [recording] booth has been relating to Devon, which is very special. She makes me feel like I’m doing what I should be doing. Because of the things I’ve been through as a young girl, when I was a teenager, and as a woman, she came very easy to me. I feel like she’s like my sister. We’re very much a part of each other.” The first two episodes of _Maul: Shadow Lord_ will drop next week, on April 6, with episodes releasing through May 4th, Star Wars Day. ##### Colin Scharff + posts Colin is a lifelong Star Wars fan and researcher who enjoys diving deep into every corner of this weird and wonderful galaxy far, far away. * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ Artists Behind 'Maul: Shadow Lord' Discuss Updated Animation and the Series' Physically-Painted Touch * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ ‘Star Wars’ Essential Legends Collection – New Listings Highlight Prequel-Era Classics and Complete 'X-Wing' Series * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ Review – ‘The Bad Batch: Rogue Agents’ #2 Sees the Batch Beat the Rogue Clones at Their Own Game * Colin Scharff https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/colinblaster __ ‘Star Wars Outlaws: Low Red Moon’ Audiobook Review: Returning Actors Make 'Outlaws' Prequel an Essential Companion Piece

‘Star Wars’ From Darth Maul’s Perspective Sounds Fascinating When Obi-Wan Kenobi cut Darth Maul in half over 25 years ago, most of us thought that was it. Maul was clearly one of the coolest and most interesting _Star Wars_ characters ever, but George Lucas chose to kill him. However, as fate would have it, the character has now come back time and time again, in large part due to Lucas’s protégé Dave Filoni, and soon, we’re gonna get way more of him than we ever thought possible. _Maul: Shadow Lord,_ a new animated series, was announced at _Star Wars_ Celebration Japan last month and it’ll bring the former Sith Lord back to the forefront in a big, big way. Speaking with fellow _Star Wars_ star Katee Sackhoff, voice of Maul Sam Witwer revealed a few broad clues about what we can expect from the show, including how Maul perceives the plan formulated by his former master, Darth Sidious. “This is a guy who knew that the Empire was coming, and he was part of that,” Witwer said on _The Sackhoff Show_. “He was supposed to be part of the Clone Wars. He was supposed to work with his master, and they were going to bring about the destruction of the Republic and the destruction of his hated enemy, the Jedi Order. He was raised to hate them. He trained his whole life to destroy them. Well, now we have a show where, OK, all of that was done, but Maul, yeah, you killed a bunch of Jedi during the Clone Wars, but you did not work with Sidious. You didn’t know the whole plan. And in fact, you got so scared about his plan that you tried to stop it at the last second.” “Now the Empire’s here, which Maul would have known that that was his master’s intent,” he continues. “But now that he’s seeing it, he’s like, ‘Is this what he had in mind? Because this isn’t what I thought it would be…’ Maul comes from a time of swords and sorcery and magic and knights and now all of that color is being sucked out of the universe by this mechanized empire. And Maul’s like, ‘Is this right? Is this the universe that we were trying to build?'” That’s fascinating, is it not? Seeing the grand plans of Emperor Palpatine through the eyes of someone who worked with him before Darth Vader. Before Count Dooku. Before Grand Moff Tarkin or Grand Admiral Thrawn. Someone who was there at the beginning and is now confused about what he thought the plan was, and what it ended up being. But, as Witwer explains, that’s kind of the aim of _Maul: Shadow Lord_. “It truly is a show about bad guys versus worse guys,” he said. “And our bad guys are still bad guys. This isn’t going to be a show where you go, oh, you find out Maul is just a real teddy bear, man. He’s just misunderstood… But the idea is, in fact, that even though he’s a bad guy, is he as bad as Sidious or Vader? And the answer is actually no. From the Sith perspective, this guy has flaws. And these flaws are… the humanity that seeps in at various points. And some of this is humanity he did not have maybe early in Clone Wars. But because of things that happened to him, he’s rethought a lot of things.” Rethinking things is part of what is making _Maul: Shadow Lord_ work too. Witwer explained that, as he was working with Filoni on _Clone Wars_ and _Rebels_ , they’d come up with ideas for Maul that they loved, but couldn’t fit in the show. Now, all those ideas are coming back. “There were ideas that I had back in _Clone Wars_ that I would present to Dave, or even in _Rebels,_ ” Witwer said. “And I also know things that Dave wanted to do. And Dave would go, ‘We’re going to cut this part out of the script that I have that I like so much because this isn’t Maul’s show.’ Or I’d say, ‘Dave, what if this happens?’ And he goes, ‘It’s not Maul’s show. You can’t go into that little level of detail. We’re seeing this from Ezra’s perspective or Ahsoka’s perspective.’ And every time he said, ‘This isn’t Maul’s show,’ it never occurred to me that Maul could have a show. So I just took those ideas and I’m like, well, I guess we’ll never see that. And now he’s like, well, it’s Maul’s show.'” You can watch the full clip below and keep an eye out for _Maul: Shadow Lord_ in 2026. > Want more io9 news? Sam Witwer Teases Maul’s Descent Into Shadow Lord Last weekend’s _Star Wars_ Celebration Japan featured the reveal of _Maul: Shadow Lord, _the next animated _Star Wars_ show. In it, the former Sith apprentice will build up his enterprise into the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate featured in _Solo_ and _Star Wars Outlaws._ During the event, IGN spoke with returning voice actor Sam Witwer, who explained the show takes place a year after _Star Wars: The Clone Wars_. Maul ended that show leaving Ahsoka and the Order 66-controlled Clones to die, and according to Witwer, the character’s in a “challenging place.” By this point in time, his mother Talzin and brother Savage have both been killed, and he’s been abandoned or betrayed by the allies he made during the Clone Wars. All that, plus Ahsoka rejecting his offer to kill Anakin and prevent Palpatine’s ascent, has him wondering what to do in life. “Maul comes from a time of magic… now he’s seeing an Empire he knew was coming, and the magic and color is being sucked out of the universe,” continued Witwer. “How does he feel about that? this different than what he expected and how does he feel that affects him? What does he wanna do about it, and can he? He’s not very equipped right now. So this is a guy who’s trying to figure out what his destiny is.” That destiny, as teased during the trailer at SWCJ, will involve taking on another apprentice teased by Witwer as “quite something.” Tone-wise, Witwer further said _Shadow Lord_ would have no such redemption play for its title character. “He’s a bad guy in this show,” the actor affirmed. “Our show is bad guys versus worse guys, so Maul is every bit as bad as he was before—in some ways even worse.” _Maul: Shadow Lord_ premieres in 2026. > Want more io9 news?
