A diptych of two square photos on a black matte. On the left, a photo of the Ullswater shoreline in winter. Not quite monochrome, but leaning that was naturally & desaturated further. A worn down tree has grown in a sharp cornered U shape & has very few smaller branches or twigs remaining. An out of frame tree has healthier branches which trail along the top. The shoreline is covered in smooth, round rocks. Several larger boulders jut above the waterline & have dark reflections. The largest at the right side of the frame is heavily covered in green moss. The cloudy sky is pale grey & the hills on the far shore are snowy. The image on the right is a photographic collage made using 16 copies of the photo on the left. The photo was rotated clockwise 90° & copies were mirrored on all sides. The sky & water alternate in vertical grey lines split by the distant shore. On the paler grey sky, the tree branches form delicate scrollwork. In contrast, the darker water is punctuated with dark spots of rocks and the bracket-like frame of the rundown tree. The rocky shore forms a bit of a mandala, but it is less obvious at this resolution. By William Wordsworth I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.
This is Ullswater in The Lake District. It was immortalised in gushing Romantic fashion by Wordsworth's poem "I wandered lonely as a cloud". (See #AltText)
