The book I’ve been reading
rests on my knee. You sleep.

It’s beautiful out there—
fields, little lakes and winter trees
in February sunlight,
every car park a shining mosaic.

Long radiant minutes,
your hand in my hand,
still warm, still warm.

I took her for my kind of person
And it was something of a shock
When my new friend revealed
That, once upon a time,
She was a Junior County Tennis Champion.

How could that happen?
How could I accidentally
Make friends with a tennis champion?
How could a tennis champion

Make friends with me?

She wasn't stupid. She read books.
She had never been mean to me
For being bad at games.
I decided to forgive
Her unfortunate past.

Sporty people can be OK -
Of course they can.
Later on, I met poets
Who played football. It's still hard
To get my head round that.

Sporty People by Wendy Cope

Pre-poem:
Why isn't there an Engineers' Corner in Westminster Abbey? In Britain we've always made more fuss of a ballad than a blueprint... How many schoolchildren dream of becoming great engineers?
-- advertisement placed in The Times by the Engineering Council

Poem:
We make more fuss of ballads than of blueprints --
That's why so many poets end up rich,
While engineers scrape by in cheerless garrets.
Who needs a bridge or dam? Who needs a ditch?

Whereas the person who can write a sonnet
Has got it made. It's always been the way,
For everybody knows that we need poems
And everybody reads them every day.

Yes, life is hard if you choose engineering --
You're sure to need another job as well;
You'll have to plan your projects in the evenings
Instead of going out. It must be hell.

While well-heeled poets ride around in Daimlers,
You'll burn the midnight oil to earn a crust,
With no hope of a statue in the Abbey,
With no hope, even, of a modest bust.

No wonder small boys dream of writing couplets
And spurn the bike, the lorry and the train.
There's far too much encouragement of poets --
That's why this country's going down the drain.

Fiancé brought me a gift from his last trip. It was #theorange from #WendyCope.
I'm still astonished by how strongly the sentence "I'm glad I exist" stuck with me. Funny how he is the one who brings me this feeling and who brought me this book.

At lunchtime I bought a huge orange—
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave—
They got quarters and I had a half.

And that orange, it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It’s new.

The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all the jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I’m glad I exist.

'A great deal of anecdotal evidence suggests that we respond positively to birdsong.' - Scientific researcher quoted in The Daily Telegraph 8.2.2012.

Centuries of English verse
Suggest the self-same thing:
A negative response is rare
When birds are heard to sing.

What's the use of poetry?
You ask. Well, here's a start.
It's anecdotal evidence
About the human heart.

Stevie Smith: Not Waving But Drowning review - riding the wave Last year, Wendy Cope’s poem, "The Orange", went viral on TikTok. I’m not totally certain how a poem goes viral, but it did – and there’s nothing we can do about it.

★★★ Stevie Smith - Not Waving But Drowning

Riding the wave of viral poetry, and #WendyCope? This slim and stylish new edition can't quite dispel some lurking doubts: Jack Barron on the 'deeply subtle poetics' of #StevieSmith, and ‘popular’ poetry.
