Suddenly the current flung a struggling form almost into my mask. Took a few secs to realise it was a diving Moorhen chick. It surfaced & headed for bankside vegetation to alarm calls of its parents.

Water Crowfoot (Ranunculus sp.) quite abundant in the River Nar at West Acre and a popular backdrop for the teeming Brown Trout Parr.

Lots of clean flinty gravels in the River Nar at West Acre, hence no shortage of Brown Trout spawning grounds, as evidenced by the exceptionally (in my experience) high density of young parr.

Usually Brown Trout face into the current, but this little beauty, sun glinting on her (short nose, concave anal fin) scales, just downstream of a log, was lying perpendicular to the current.

Here's a rewilded stretch of the River Nar upstream of Abbey House to the ford, a Brown Trout peaceful paradise of overhanging vegetation, woody debris in the channel, riffles over clean gravel shallows, deep pools... Water 15.7°C, air 16.4°C #chalkstreams #Norfolk #WestAcre 8/15
A favourite place for Brown Trout is in caves formed under overhanging vegetation along the river bank (I find them with my underwater torch). The River Nar at West Acre has this in abundance, hence in part, the high density of trout. #chalkstreams @WildTroutTrust #WestAcre 7/15
Actually, there was rather little Water Crowfoot (Ranunculus) in River Nar at West Acre & way too much green algae (Vaucheria?); if only upstream nutrient inputs could be reduced. From agriculture & sewage? Visibility also rather low. #WildflowerID #Wildflowerhour #WestAcre 4/15
