📢 New paper out!
We studied exposure to #flaviviruses and #AvianInfluenza virus in #urban house martins from southwestern Spain.
🧪 No viral RNA detected, but antibodies revealed.
🏘️ Urban birds may act as sentinels of zoonotic viruses.

Productivity 🐣 of gannets that have survived #avianflu does not differ from those that have never been infected - BUT productivity since the 2022 HPAI outbreak is worryingly low.

9/11 The situation may be even worse than modelled, as the research doesn't account for reinfection from wild bird populations—an ongoing avian reservoir that could repeatedly seed new outbreaks in cattle herds.

6/9 First reported in Lake Ontario in 2005, VHS has since spread throughout the Great Lakes system. Though deadly to fish, the virus cannot infect humans or other mammals, even if they consume infected fish.

CDV found in wild tree shrews for the first time in Malaysia 🦠
This overlooked species could be silently sustaining the virus & fuelling spillover to endangered Malayan tigers 🐅

2/7 The official count of 12,000 infected wild birds is "a gross underestimate" since most dead birds are never tested, according to Bryan Richards at the US Geological Survey's National Wildlife Health Center. The actual impact is likely much higher.

2/8 New Canadian detections include a snow goose near Montreal, a great horned owl in Ontario, & a Canada goose in B.C.
"Now that birds are coming back north, we don't really know what's coming to us," warns Dr. Manon Racicot of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Repost - Please share to help us reach a wide audience. This survey is contributing to Masters and PhD projects in my group. The more responses we get the better we can help improve guidance on #parasite #conservation. Links to the survey are in the thread below 🪱🧪🌍🦤 #WildlifeDisease #WildlifeHealth

Hey #WildlifeDisease & #conservation folk, please check out our survey on attitudes to parasite conservation.
Are parasites important for biodiversity, would you remove them to protect host welfare, or something more nuanced? We want to hear all views to improve guidance for practitioners 🪱🧪🌍🧵1/n

🌎🧪Leprosy has become endemic in Florida. A new case report adds evidence that common routes of transmission (contact with infected people or wildlife) do not explain many new infections in Floridians. Another zoonotic disease mystery to solve! #OneHealth #WildlifeDisease

What was once a rodent disease has again become a human epidemic in Africa. Previous epidemics of Mpox virus spread to Europe and the US. Empowering African nations to manage public health crises should be a global priority #OneHealth #WildlifeDisease

Juvenile snow goose that is listless and will not try to flee when approached.
I found this juv snow goose yesterday. It was listless and barely upright. Without evidence of trauma, I would put highly pathogenic #influenza at the top of my ruleout list. I've been seeing a lot of mortality in snow geese, esp last year.
