All the rain lately has kept the seedlings happy and moist so much that you can see the condensation inside. 2 small containers each of 2 varieties.

Jugs open, you can see all the happy babies with their first few true leaves starting to show the little spiky bits next to a par of garden gloves and a spade.

Today’s #AlwaysBePlanting report: Some adorable baby #WinterSowing ‘Drama Queen’ & ‘Black Beauty’ poppy seedlings. Yes, they go out this small because the roots already almost reach the bottom of the 4 inches of soil and they don’t like being manhandled.

A small, dark brown or black salamander with a coppery red back lies on the bottom of a soggy, open-topped corrugated cardboard box, surrounded by bits of potting soil. Its body is in a slightly kinked posture, facing to upper right, and its tail curves around to the left and appears slightly stubby at its end. At bottom left grass can be seen outside the box, and at right are the sides of a couple of plastic two-liter bottles wrapped in blue tape. A stick has been placed in the box to form a ramp.

In today’s picture is the friend I made when I went to check on my seeds/sprouts. 😍 I moved one of the 2-liters (Anemone virginiana, no sprouts yet) & there it was! An eastern red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus).

Eyeballing into the opening of a milk jug sown with Late Figwort. Lots of little, bright green sprouts popping through. None grew for me last year. I attribute this year's success to sifting the soil of the obnoxious chunks and lightly pressing the seeds down for better contact. Hurray for me, hurray for the 🐝🐝🐝!

I had a few vacant minutes so I sled along some more #WinterSowing

Amaranthus, which I have never grown, but the variety name is “love lies bleeding” which is simply too Gothic to resist.

And Cosmos which are seeds that I collected from last year’s flowers. #GardenJournal2026.

Fuzzy Phacelia, Phacelia hirsuta, four? seedlings with tiny round blue-green cotyledon leaves.

Standing Cypress, Ipomopsis rubra has long skinny cotyledons and one plant has true leaves that are forked like little tridents.

White Vervain, Vervena urticifolia. Little triangular leaves, looks just like Mountain mint to me. These seeds were from a volunteer in my garden. The dog stepped on this container and smashed the top in, so it's crooked. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a, March 7 2026.
