I found Emily's voice at last.

Emily wondered what the bombs would be like. Only the older ones remembered being in a war before, and everyone was saying this one was different. Worse, somehow. She thought about all the people at the factories, the young women out meeting soldiers and enjoying themselves. They didn't seem to be worrying about the bombs. Maybe Mam was just worrying too much. But she thought again of the man with his angry eyes shouting at the crowd and she felt frightened again. He was a monster man. She knew that. And if he was coming, then maybe she was wrong. She couldn't fight him like her Jimmy, or Nonna could.

It's taking time to get Emily's voice - she's quite childlike, somehow. And I feel bad because I'm about to ruin her life.
