Drood Amazon.com: Drood: 9780316007030: Simmons, Dan: Books

Approximately halfway through #DanSimmons' Drood; I have so far resisted googling a single thing about #WilkieCollins, #CharlesDickens, or #TheMysteryofEdmundDrood. Delayed gratification FTW.

Dear Mama. Your embon has become rather too pointed and to quote Mr #wilkieCollins you have acquired an autumnal exuberance of figure. We have made you an appointment with Mr #WilliamBanting #GirlsOwnCC

Quando ero più piccino vidi lo sceneggiato televisivo tratto dal libro di Wilkie Collins. Mi aveva talmente appassionato che comprai il libro e riuscii a leggerlo prima della fine dell'ultima puntata.

The National Year of Reading celebrates the ‘joy’ of books. But let’s not forget they can also be deeply troubling, too | Charlotte Higgins Encounters with great art can be absorbing, unsettling and even painful. How has this been tamed into ‘reading for pleasure’, asks Charlotte Higgins, the Guardian’s chief culture writer

#NationalReadingYear www.theguardian.com/commentisfre... I worry about The Youth' not reading. Maybe this is an explanation. They're disturbed by encountering 'diffficult' material. Currently re-reading #WilkieCollins' #TheMoonstone and #JamesCurtis' W.C. Fields: A Biography.

I'm so used to female voices (I've read mostly women for the last 2 years) that any sexist idea/comment by male authors hurts unbearably. I'm aware of the XIX century mindset, but #WilkieCollins hits a new sexist record in the first pages of #TheWomanInWhite. Bad start or norm? Future DNF?

The Scottish #NotProven verdict is at the centre of one of my favourite #WilkieCollins novels “The law and the lady” Strong minded heroine and one of his wonderful villains

Wilkie Collins’s No Name in the Penguin Classics edition

A real page turner – #NoName by #WilkieCollins starts like a satire à la Trollope and then turns into a thriller with more twists than you’d think reasonable. Also – brilliant, funny passages about dogs
