Question for you #woodturners out there:
How many chucks is enough? I got another one today, but Iβm pretty sure that where O is the optimum number of chucks and n is the number currently owned, itβs always a case of
O == n + 1 π³
Also, curious #Caturday! #woodturning #woodworking #woodsky
This was an interesting one, because I had to make it up as I went along. Reasonably pleased with it and it holds this 7β#CrystalBall really well. Itβs turned from hard maple and purple heart.
Never mind any other items in the photos. π

A shelf displaying an olive wood candlestick, a purple-framed dragon print, a curved walnut, maple and purpleheart wood bandsaw box.
Too exhausted after yesterdayβs concert to post much, so instead hereβs a photo of an olive candlestick with very pretty grain, plus a little bandsaw box. #woodworking #woodturning #woodsky #wood

I guess
Just put this piece of Roman olive through the bandsaw to cut it to the size I want, and I was immediately rewarded with a view of its unexpectedly stunning grain pattern.
You never know whatβs hiding inside a piece of #wood. π₯°

A small wooden mallet by a window.
Hubby asked for a small mallet, so I made one from tauari wood. Itβs imperfect, but heβs happy with it and as itβs the first Iβve ever made, Iβm trying to see more than those imperfections! Itβll do the job he wants it to do, so I guess thatβs a win? π

The inside of an ambrosia maple bowl, reflecting the California sunshine.
The side view of a slightly angular, turned ambrosia maple bowl.
The bottom of a turned, ambrosia maple bowl.
Popped into the workshop for a short while to finish this ambrosia maple bowl. I like this modern, angular shape contrasting with the βnature is equal parts weird and amazingβ patterning in the wood. It even has some tiny holes in it, which I love. #woodworking #woodsky #woodturning #turning
One of the things I love about wood is that every piece tells its own story. Iβve been turning this gorgeous piece of ambrosia maple today, and I love the way the matte ambrosia pattern and tiny holes contrast with the chatoyancy of the maple. #woodworking #woodturning #woodsky #turning
It looks like an entire 80s glam rock band got their hair cut in here. π
On the bright side, I didnβt know myrtle wood smelled so gorgeous! #woodworking #woodturning #woodsky
I just sold my first piece of #woodwork! π³ Iβm a little startled. Apparently a colleague of my husband fell in love with the little spalted tamarind bowl. π
#woodworking #woodturning #woodsky
The little spalted tamarind bowl I finished earlier. I wanted to make something that felt good to hold, and the shape of this is definitely very tactile. Needed to stabilise some slightly punky parts of the blank, but Iβm pretty pleased with it. #woodturning #woodworking #woodsky #turning
My husband has put some googly eyes on a magnet and keeps secretly relocating them. So now every time I walk into the workshop, one of the machines is looking at me funny.
Today itβs the lathe. π

A large, circular piece of light wood turning on a lathe.
A partially finished, shiny, round piece of birch wood attached to a lathe.
A shiny piece of birch mounted on a lathe, showing beautiful grain markings.
Itβs been a wonderfully rainy day here, so I had the workshop garage door open while I played. Nothing nicer than a slightly cool, rainy day in the valley.
On the lathe right now: a big piece of birch that my lovely husband brought home for me ages ago. #woodworking #woodturning #woodsky
Yesterday, I chose a block of jatoba wood (sometimes called Brazilian cherry, though itβs not a true cherry) to mount on my lathe. I wasnβt sure what to expect as the grain seemed quite boringβ¦but itβs polished up super pretty! Loving that warm red-brown shade. #woodworking #woodturning #woodsky
In the height of Virginia summer, my father-in-law helped me excavate a gigantic bear of a tree root. I turned that tree root into a mug as a Christmas present to him. The handle is a separate piece of wood I purchased and hand carved to shape #woodsky #woodworking
This chunk of wood came from a root of a tree in my back yard. It has some amazing color variations of black, purple, and dark brown. I'm not entirely sure of the species. It smells like pepper, but that could be dirt. It is relatively easy to cut, but it is dulling my tools very rapidly. #woodsky
A sketch on graph paper of a piece of furniture
Next piece of furniture I'm building. It will replace a set of drawers we have in the kitchen. Each person will get their own drawer, bag cubby, and show cubby.
I think I'm going to do a live edge slab top.

Todayβs woodshop soundtrack, since Iβm working alone (and seriously, how am I being left in a fully functional woodshop without responsible adult supervision?! π) is βEnchantβ by Emilie Autumn, which I havenβt heard in ages. π₯° #music #woodworking #woodsky #happy

Did I post this yet? I don't remember and I'm not going to check, here is a table! Well end table. Maybe Coffee table.

Finally finished up this tnd table, I'm not sure what the table top wood is, but sanded that down added the bowties for stability and then made the big legs for it, those are mortised into place.

This is burnt white oak, I think this *turned* out nicely, it was weird taking a torch to a thing I just made. But I highly recommend people try this it comes out looking quite cool, just have a spray bottle handy :)

Pine burl, I like how it came out, the swirls and wall thickness. I picked up this burl from a scrap pile at my local wood supplier

Spent the evening planning Frankencart, a mobile unit to house most of my #woodturning bits and pieces, plus the grindstone and honing wheels, and made from any offcuts and spare bits of plywood I have around. Itβs been fun! π Also, weβre printing organisational bits. #woodworking #woodsky
