They were striking against another union–and not just any union. This strike pitted the United Farm Workers against the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Through labor talks, the teamsters had won the right to organize farm workers. Of course, this infuriated the UFW. So the two unions began antagonizing each other. There were arrests, court actions, fighting in the fields, and a UFW regional office was bombed. Lettuce growers lost an estimated half a million dollars a day as their crops were left to rot in the fields. An agreement was made – eight months after the strike began – that resulted in the UFW regaining its jurisdiction to organize and represent farm workers. That was the end of the Salad Bowl Strike but not the end of the dispute between the two unions. That would rage for another three years until California passed the Agricultural Labor Relations Act in 1975. It enshrined the right to collective bargaining for farmworkers in that state, a first in U.S. history.

On August 23rd, 1970, the Salad Bowl Strike began in California. Organized by labor leader Cesar Chavez, it grew to be the largest strike by farm workers in U.S. history.
