Three asiatic lily blossoms: the petals are a deep maroon/purple verging on black but grade to white at the tips and at the centre of the flower. Each has six large petals in a star-like shape, except for the one at the bottom which has an extra petal overlapping the leftmost one.

We have a volunteer lily in a rather wild shrubby corner of our garden. My kids have dubbed it the “night lily” (as opposed to the day lilies we have plenty of) or alternately the “miss kim” after a quirky and vivacious choir director they all sang under. Probably […]

#DYK you can donate your garden produce to Edmonton's Food Bank? Annette grew this lettuce, and it's already helping others!

Grow a row for us this summer! Whether it's a handful of beans or a truckload of zucchini, it helps. Thank YOU! #yeg #yeggarden #feedyeg #yegfoodbank

A small yard urban flower garden, kind of messy, with masses of creeping thyme in full glorious purple bloom, some purple Veronica, pink and white peonies nearing the end of their bloom cycle, with yellow sunflowers and a wee blue delphinium lurking in the background behind bursts of rogue orange globeflowers that leapt their original planting areas. Nestled among the flowers, a stone birdbath, a few aged red bricks, and some weather beaten ceramic chunks resembling nothing more than smoky cream and grey chunks of bones (but they’re ceramics, leftovers from an arresting art show years ago.)

The bees are happy and that helps tremendously. Also featuring garden art by @paulboultbee.bsky.social affectionately known as Burnt Severed Deer Legs (it’s vegan art, calm down).

So I think we have a verticillium wilt infection. 😞
Any other gardeners in the fediverse have experience with this?

The back story: several years ago we planted a pair of laceleaf elderberry to frame our front door. One did lovely, the other didn’t survive the winter so we replaced it. The new […]

Is it for arborists? Sure, but you'll also like it if you're a tree and garden nerd like me.

We have an acoustic ecologist, forest bather, post-industrial arborist and inventor, tree equity advocate, and hunter of deadly shiny tree bugs.

May 6th is the average date of the final spring frost in Edmonton, so half of the time we're already done, and half of the time there are still more frosts to come.
The airport is much later on May 24th, and Stony Plain's is May 10th...
