Aber zum Barackenabort bedarf es einer Wanderung über bestenfalls sandigen, oft verschlammten Hof. English: November 17, 1942 Eva visited the Reichenbachs today: They, too, have to go to the barracks. Frau Reichenbach, both feet in plaster, was declared fit to travel. But it is a long walk across a yard, which is sandy at best, and often muddy, to reach the barracks latrines.

November 1942 Am Nachmittag brachten Frankel und Frau Ziegler als Gewißheit heim, was schon seit einer Weile als Gerücht kursierte: Die jüdischen Arbeiter bei Zeiss-Ikon, etwa dreihundert von den noch in Dresden befindlichen sechshundert Juden, kommen in Baracken. Das läuft auf eine tatsächliche Evakuierung hinaus, denn auch sie werden bis auf das Handgepäck enteignet, und man hält sie dann wie Gefangene: Gemeinschaftslager, Gemeinschaftskost, in Gruppen zur Arbeit geführt - sonst im Lager festgehalten, keine Bücher, keine Zeitungen, keine Kommunikation mit der Welt. Was geschieht nun mit dem Rest der Juden hier, mit den Mischehen, mit uns? English: November 13, 1942 In the afternoon Frankel and Frau Ziegler brought home as certain fact what had already been circulating as rumor for a while: the Jewish workers at Zeiss-Ikon, about three hundred of the six hundred Jews still to be found in Dresden, are to be put in barracks. That amounts, in fact, to evacuation, because they, too, will have everything confiscated apart from hand luggage, and they will be held like prisoners: in a camp together, eating together, taken to work in groups - otherwise detained in the camp; no books, no newspapers, no communication with the world outside. What will now happen to the remainder of the Jews here, to the mixed marriages, to us?
