A little ragged, but still a thing of beauty...
A Peacock butterfly on a blackthorn hedge. This is a large butterfly, born last summer, that has overwintered in hibernation, and will now be looking to mate. It's mainly red and brown, with markings in black, white, and blue, and a threatening eye spot on each of its wings. This individual is somewhat faded and torn, but still impressive. It had been feeding from the white blackthorn blossom, but in this photo it is coiling up its long proboscis.
