abandoned trenches trowels scattered where they had been dropped the glint of potsherds forming asterisms in the full moon’s glare a gust of wind rain-laden grabs a battered door and slams it and again against the prefab. office wall and in the mud that fills the site a viscous sucking fathomless expanse brown shining bubbles rise and as they burst they blurt out hollow moans despairing cries the hopeless pleas for mercy from a score of long-departed unpaid volunteers

pink salt we are nowhere near the himalayas the encrusted skin stinging a death by a thousand cuts like cats of vermillion escaping from the great salt lake scrambling up your arms leaving perforated welts like the switch hastily cut by her bitter hand from the cherry tree on the shady side of the house even the crickets refused to testify in your defense they remained silent when the locomotive that birthed you was careening off the tracks becoming like a creek turtle i turned my shell outward trying to weather the impact i shatter like safety glass into a hundred pieces she smiles when i break the blood drips from my back down my arms and slowly seeps into the salt at my feet.
