The only photo I could find was this plate of Mangifera gedebe. In the lower image, that’s all folded cotyledons, not ruminate endosperm! It’s from The Mangoes: Their Botany, Nomenclature, Horticulture and Utilization by A.J.G.H. Kostermans (2012). #seed #cotyledon #Anacardiaceae #Botany

As all gardeners know, cotyledons (the pair of seed "leaves") can look very different from the true, adult leaves of a plant. The cotyledons of this Operculicarya decaryi seedling are simple & linear, but the true leaves are pinnately compound. #seed #cotyledon #Anacardiaceae #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

While looking at axillary buds, I noticed this strange phenomenon in Rhus glabra: The petiole base completely covers & conceals the axillary bud, which is revealed (and can grow) only when the leaf has fallen away. #Anacardiaceae #buds #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

My beautiful little cashew is flowering for the first time today. I love the entire Anacardiaceae family, but as far as fruit trees go this is definitely in my top 5.

While hiking in a natural area today I passed a young boy trying to uproot a small poison ivy plant, then giving up and rubbing his face and eyes. I told his mom that it was poison ivy but she gave me dagger eyes and just walked away. That kid is going to be in agony tomorrow. #botany #anacardiaceae

Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) is widely feared, as it causes nasty rashes in many folks, but we are not the only animals interacting with this species. (It's not about us!) The flowers are great for pollinators, & songbirds eat the fruits (β†’disperse seeds). #Anacardiaceae #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Here in the temperate zone, the showiness of Anacardiaceae is down to their autumn foliage. This is Rhus copallinum of eastern N. America. The autumnal foliage color is spectacular. #Anacardiaceae #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Anacardiaceae are not known for showy flowers. Anacardium braziliense (syn. A. spruceanum) brings the bling with showy bracts subtending the inflorescence (=pseudanthium). πŸ“·1 by esa_bt CCBYNC4. πŸ“·2 by mapoflife_rapidassessments CCBYNC4. #Anacardiaceae #tropicalbotany #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

The flowers of Anacardiaceae are typical for the order (Sapindales). Note the enlarged, donut-shaped nectar disc between the stamens and the gynoecium (pistil). This is the flower of a mango (Mangifera indica) cultivar that has fewer stamens than the wild type. #Anacardiaceae #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

#Anacardiaceae fruits are wonderfully diverse in terms of structure & modes of seed dispersal. Amphipterygium (5 spp in seasonally dry forests of Mexico & Central Amer.) has wind-dispersed fruits. This is Amphipterygium adstringens (πŸ“·: comuneroschilac CCBYNC4) in the dry season. #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Semecarpus is an Asian analog of the American Anacardium. Like its American cousin, it has fleshy, attractive pedicels subtending the fruit. Also like its cousin, it has dermatitis-causing chemicals in its tissues, but the seed dispersers are unaffected. #Anacardiaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

The fruits of cashew (Anacardium occidentale) are unusual. The familiar nut is borne inside the hard-shelled fruit at the distal end of the fleshy, attractive, edible pedicel. I don’t know what disperses the seeds in nature. Primates? Bats? #Anacardiaceae #tropicalbotany #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

This photo looks like a bowl of tomatoes, but these fruits are Spondias purpurea, a tree native to the tropical Americas. Some people love these fruits; I am not one of those people. The fruits are drupes (fleshy, with a seed-enclosing stone). #Anacardiaceae #tropicalbotany #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

#Anacardiaceae are a worldwide family of woody plants, some of which (cashews, mangoes) are economically important. HT to Susan Pell & Matt on the In Defense of Plants podcast for reminding me that, until now, I’ve never devoted a week to this family. πŸ“·: mangoes #tropicalbotany #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolia) flowers attract pollinators, & fruits feed migratory & resident birds. It is, however, a horrific weed that invades & smoothers native plants in some parts of the world, like my home state of Florida. #Goodplantbadplant #Anacardiaceae #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ

Mangos are borne are long, whip-like (flagelliform) stalks. It has nothing to do with access by insect pollinators & everything to do with seed dispersal by #bats (of mango's wild ancestors & relations). Mangifera indica by Scot Nelson CC0 #Anacardiaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany #PlantScience 🌾
