I’m currently writing about the history of wood duck conservation and have spent the last few weeks trying to find one in real life (out of the archive!) as they arrive for spring nesting season.

Child standing at a table on which some taxidermy specimens of birds are placed, as well as a bin of bird study skins of ducks.
I recently joined the Peterborough Field Naturalists @ptbonature.bsky.social with my child and was happy to witness taxidermy as a tool for hands-on learning for the “junior naturalists” last weekend at Trent University. #animalhist

Inside Goodall’s cabin at Gombe. Piles of books, skulls of apes and other animals, empty wine bottles and candles.
One of Goodall’s bookshelves, with a stuffed baboon toy.
Old chimp feeding station at Gombe.
Besides the chimps, the material legacy of her research there was especially memorable for me. Her cabin (and all the books, skulls, and objects collected by her and others over the years), her son “grub”’s house that kept him safe from the baboons, the old feeding station. #animalhist

A new #animalhist article by @monicavasile.bsky.social takes on the history of takhi reintroductions. It's a fascinating read and incredibly moving (pun, I suppose, intended). In the open-access #envhum journal, so it's free to read!
I had never heard of Tom Lehrer (or at least don’t recall I had) so with all the posts about him, I decided to look up his work.
He has an AMAZING #envhist #animalhist song: Poisoning Pigeons in the Park
