WALL FRESCO, 50-1 BCE. POMPEII, ANTIQUARIUM Unfortunately we don't know where this fresco comes from, beyond the "Vesuvian area". But this marvellous painting would be right at home in one of the great villas in Stabiae. This has a close resemblance to frescoes in the villa of P. Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale. A central arched ædicule with a pointed pediment, predominantly in cinnabar, focuses our attention on a square pillar in the centre distance full of mystical significance: a rudder, symbol of Tyche or Fortune, pierces it on a diagonal; above it is a priestly hat, and at top are two golden onion-shaped jars, the larger of which has a serpent curled around it, a traditional protector of the household. The blue background is rich with plant life but on a far larger scale than it should be if the architecture is intended as life-sized. Two symmetrical colonnades on either side contain gilded bronze statues, and two female herms bracket the ensemble. What does it all mean?

#FrescoFriday this week offers a challenge to which I openly admit to not being equal. This magnificent #fresco is in the #antiquarium of #Pompeii, with few details. Its generous use of expensive #cinnabar and complex fictive #architecture suggest it comes from a villa of the 1%. #AncientBluesky 🏺
